Her Story

About Debbie

Debbie Shen is an emerging risk analytics professional currently pursuing a Master of Engineering in Risk Engineering at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. In her first semester, she is studying numerical linear algebra, optimization, big data analysis, risk resilience and management, leadership, and business engineering. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and has actuarial exam credentials in Financial Mathematics (FM) and Probability (P). With three years of experience in risk management, Debbie has developed a strong foundation in financial mathematics, statistical modeling, data engineering, and quantitative analytics, with particular interests in quantitative risk, credit risk analysis, AI risk, and business strategy.
Previously, Debbie spent nearly two years as a Credit Risk Analyst at Joblogic-X, where she analyzed more than 200,000 personal loan applications, developed credit scoring models, evaluated underwriting policies, and conducted risk segmentation to support data-driven lending decisions. She also built automated reporting pipelines that reduced manual reporting time by 40%. As the industry evolved toward greater adoption of artificial intelligence, she took on responsibilities involving AI agent development, exploring ways to improve risk operations through automation and intelligent systems. Her experience also includes working as a Marketing Data Analyst for the Organization of Chinese Career, where she developed analytics dashboards, improved customer relationship management data segmentation, and delivered insights to guide marketing strategy. Additionally, her undergraduate research at the Illinois Risk Lab focused on climate-related financial and insurance risks, including scenario modeling and enterprise risk management tools. Alongside her graduate studies, Debbie serves as a student leader on the Duke Pratt Student Advisory Board and works as a TOEFL instructor, helping students strengthen their language skills and pursue study-abroad opportunities.
Originally from China, Debbie attributes her success to resilience, courage, and a commitment to continually challenging herself. Her experience adapting to different cultural and educational environments has reinforced her belief in independent thinking, continuous learning, and pursuing opportunities beyond conventional expectations. She encourages young women entering technical fields, particularly STEM and engineering, to believe in their abilities, explore diverse career paths despite cultural stereotypes, and remain committed to their goals even when others may not understand their vision. Outside of her academic and professional pursuits, Debbie enjoys hiking, organizing social events, exploring new experiences, and spending time with friends and family. She values building meaningful relationships and creating opportunities for others to connect and grow. Looking ahead, she aims to apply her analytical expertise and engineering mindset to opportunities in quantitative risk, data science, financial technology, and technology risk, developing innovative, data-driven solutions to complex business challenges.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Debbie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, courage, and a willingness to step outside my comfort zone. Moving from China at a young age taught me to adapt to new environments, embrace change, and persevere through challenges. Throughout my journey, I have continued to challenge myself, pursue growth opportunities, and remain open to new experiences that have helped shape both my personal and professional development.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have learned is to believe in myself, think independently, and pursue opportunities based on my interests and abilities rather than societal expectations. Growing up in China and navigating different educational systems and cultural environments exposed me to traditional beliefs about which careers were suitable for women, particularly in fields such as engineering and finance. These experiences taught me the importance of challenging limitations, having the courage to pursue my ambitions, and trusting my own potential. I believe it is essential to encourage young women to break through stereotypes, build confidence, and pursue careers in any field where their talents and passions can thrive.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to believe in themselves, stay curious, and remain open to exploring different fields, even when cultural expectations or societal stereotypes suggest that certain careers, particularly in STEM and engineering, are not meant for women. Do not let other people's opinions or lack of understanding discourage you from pursuing your goals. Have the courage to challenge traditional expectations, trust your abilities, and stay committed to your vision, even when the path becomes difficult. Remember that your potential should never be defined by stereotypes or limitations imposed by others. Keep learning, persevere through challenges, and have confidence in the future you are building for yourself.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, which is transforming the workforce by replacing some traditional roles while creating new opportunities. This shift requires us to adapt our mindsets, embrace change, and commit to continuous learning to remain relevant in an evolving professional landscape. At the same time, AI presents exciting opportunities, particularly for aspiring entrepreneurs, by lowering the barriers to starting and growing businesses. I believe those who are willing to learn, think creatively, and leverage emerging technologies will be well positioned to navigate these changes and turn challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my professional and personal life are independence, resilience, courage, continuous learning, and personal growth. I believe in trusting my abilities, persevering through challenges, and pursuing my goals without allowing societal expectations or others' doubts to define my potential. I also value family and meaningful relationships, making an effort to stay connected with my loved ones in China, especially my grandparents. Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, exploring new experiences, and organizing social events that bring people together and help build lasting friendships. Through my involvement with Duke University's Student Advisory Board, I find fulfillment in creating opportunities for others to connect and develop a sense of community. Ultimately, I believe that continued growth, strong relationships, and creating opportunities for others are essential to living a meaningful and fulfilling life.
