Her Story

About Denise

Dr. Denise A. Valenti is an optometrist, researcher, inventor, and entrepreneur whose career has been dedicated to advancing vision science, neuroprocessing, and impaired driving research. As the Founder and President of IMMAD LLC (Impairment Measurement Marijuana and Driving), she has pioneered the development of objective technology designed to help law enforcement identify marijuana-related driving impairment through vision-based retinal testing. With more than four decades of experience in clinical care, rehabilitation, and scientific research, she has become a recognized authority in the intersection of vision health, cognitive function, aging, and transportation safety. Her work reflects a commitment to improving public safety while promoting responsible cannabis use through evidence-based education and innovative technology.

Dr. Valenti earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in General Science from Oregon State University before completing her Doctor of Optometry degree at the Southern California College of Optometry. She further specialized through residency training in low vision and vision rehabilitation, focusing on adaptive driving technologies and rehabilitation strategies for individuals with visual impairments. Throughout her career, she has conducted NIH-funded research on Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, retinal imaging, optical coherence tomography, and visual field technologies. Her clinical experience spans more than 25 years of direct patient care, including work with underserved populations, while her academic appointments have included teaching optometry, geriatrics, and neurodegenerative disease at institutions such as MCPHS University and Quincy College.

Beyond her clinical and academic accomplishments, Dr. Valenti has established herself as a respected speaker, consultant, and advocate for impaired-driving prevention. She has consulted on aging, vision, and driving, contributed medical content to professional publications nationwide, and regularly lectures healthcare professionals, law enforcement agencies, and criminal justice organizations on cannabis impairment and roadway safety. Her patented IMMAD technology—currently advancing through validation and regulatory processes—represents years of research into the effects of cannabis on retinal function and cognitive processing. Driven by both scientific curiosity and a deeply personal commitment to preventing impaired-driving tragedies, Dr. Valenti continues to champion innovations that improve public safety, advance forensic science, and support fair, objective impairment assessment.

Ten minutes with Denise

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to have an idea and protect it. Great ideas have value, but they only make a difference when you safeguard them, develop them thoughtfully, and stay committed to bringing them to life.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to build a strong professional network, develop solid foundational and communication skills, and never stop learning. Be kind, support others whenever you can, and remember that the relationships you build through respect, collaboration, and generosity can be just as valuable as your technical expertise.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is securing adequate funding. At the same time, funding also presents one of the greatest opportunities, as increased investment can drive innovation, expand access, and create a greater impact for the communities we serve.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me in both my work and personal life are rooted in my love and commitment to my son, Mark Alvin DeSylvia. He is my greatest inspiration and the driving force behind everything I do, motivating me to work with purpose, integrity, and dedication while always striving to build a better future for him.
