Her Story

About Emily

I'm currently in my junior year of college, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Business, and I've been working in the finance field for about a year as an administrative assistant at a financial group. Being able to get into such a competitive field at my age has given me a real advantage and set me up for success in my future. What I love about my path is that I'm combining my psychology major with my business minor to eventually work in the field of Finance or Marketing, where I can help people with their business decisions and understand the emotional side of how they feel about their decisions. Right now, I'm focused on finishing my education and building more experience as an administrative assistant before I move into a more specialized role. I don't have specific labels on where I want to go in the field yet, but I know I want to develop more within my career and find a role in the field that fits best with my goals. Being able to have this experience behind me at my age, and having that one step ahead of everyone, was really a good moment for me because it sets me up for success in the future.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think my success attributes to both the way I was raised and the people I've surrounded myself with. Honestly, I have to attribute almost everything to my mom, because she has shown me nothing but kindness, and how to act myself professionally, and how to develop myself as a young woman. As I grew up, I also surrounded myself with people that were a good influence for me, who always wanted to help me strive in my journey and always supported where I was going. My uncle has also been incredibly influential because he's the one that got me that foot in the door into the area I am in now, and that I will hopefully develop into professionally one day. Having that support system and those role models has been crucial to everything I've achieved so far.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've received is to stay true to yourself and be confident. As long as you're true to yourself, you're true to other people. You want to make sure that you're being you and not cheating yourself. For example, if you say you're going to do something, like an assignment tomorrow, and you never do it, you're not being true to yourself. It's about making sure you follow through and don't take opportunities away from yourself by not being authentic and honest with who you are.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would share that you need to be confident with what you do, because if you're not confident, then someone else may not be confident in you. You need to make sure you're confident in where you are and your foundation, and that will take you really far. Confidence in yourself and what you bring to the table is essential for success in this field and any field you pursue, just don’t be over confident.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

For me personally, authenticity is always most important because you want to be authentic and put forward that you have a good foundation. I always love sticking with a good foundation of truth and authenticity for people.

I feel personally I always bring a confident front with these attributes , but I can balance being professional and being a friend at the same time. I can be with you professionally, but I can also be your friend and have a good time. That balance is really important to me in how I approach both my work and personal relationships.
