Her Story

About Grace

My journey has been quite a path. I started with a bachelor's at Campbell University, initially intending to do med school and become a physical therapist, but after hitting chemistry, I became a psychology major. I went to Southeastern Seminary to get my Master's in leadership with full intention of going into women's counseling. While working my way through grad school at a church, our graphic designer left, and our lead pastor asked who wants to learn graphic design. I thought, well, I'm creative, and I want some more hours, so I'll do it. I fell in love with it and trained one-on-one with a friend already in the industry. I started my own business doing graphic design, then moved into marketing, really trying to make all of my designs tell a story. I got into social media and email campaigns, and began communicating from the stage at the church my husband and I planted. Last summer, I started feeling the pull towards nonprofits, and when the position opened up here at the Center, I knew it was the place for me. It was pretty much a tailored role for the way I was wanting to go in my career - inspiring people to support a mission that I felt so deeply called to and experienced the benefits of myself. I've been in graphic design since 2016, moved into marketing, and then into development and communication, so it's all kind of bled together ever since then. I just started in this particular position as of December.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I'm not one for collecting accolades or anything like that. The biggest thing I'm proud of is walking into this role and seeking out passion work. One thing I ran into as an entrepreneur doing my own graphic design and communication thing - while I enjoyed the creative aspect, I did not like creating a graphic and sending it to the customer and saying, okay, good luck with life. I wanted to make a difference. So the biggest thing I'm proud of is finding something that does my heart good, that is a passion work for me that truly makes a difference. Not letting money or the stigma that comes with pivoting directions in your career stop me, because a lot of times people will say, oh, well, you just gave up. No, I'm honoring my desire to make a difference. I feel like that has been the biggest thing I could be proud of myself for - not pursuing the money and climbing the corporate ladder, but doing something that makes a difference in the world and that I could give back.
