Her Story
About Heather
My career started when a friend got me my first job and gave me advice that changed everything: learn as much as you can, as fast as you can. I took that to heart, and pretty soon I knew more than my coworkers and was able to start teaching them what I had learned. That moved me into a role as a trainer and teacher, someone sharing knowledge, which changed the trajectory of my career. What I thought I was going to be doing is not necessarily what I ended up doing over 20-plus years of my career. I moved into legal technology, doing that same thing over and over again: learning as much as I can, as fast as I can, and then sharing. Over the years, I built my career and was able to advise with implementations of new software, leveraging the knowledge I had gained from years of experience working in the environment. I now do consulting with other industries that feed into legal, and I'm considered an expert at a lot of things and regarded in my industry. I just presented at the Legal Innovators Conference on AI transformation, and we are truly at a new spot. I'm doing the same thing: learning as much as I can about AI, though AI is faster than me. My last role was as one of the directors of IT Technology, focused on project management and training, for over 20 years. In April, I was transitioned out of that role, and now I'm looking to go in with another company as a director of innovation, really leaning into what my skill set is: finding that new technology and helping people lean into it.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Heather
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think my most notable achievement was getting up every day and going and doing the work, showing up every day despite life's challenges that we all experience as part of living life. Not giving up, not always being present in the moment, being dedicated. When I was transitioned out after 20-plus years, I realized they can't take away everything I got from it. They can't take away the skill, they can't take away the knowledge, they can't take away the friendships. That's what you've got to move forward with.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was from a friend who got me my first job. She told me: learn as much as you can, as fast as you can. I just took that to heart, and pretty soon I knew more than my coworkers and was able to start teaching them what I had learned. That advice has been the foundation of my entire career. I've applied it over and over again throughout my 20-plus years in legal technology, and now I'm doing the same thing with AI, learning as much as I can, as fast as I can, and then sharing that knowledge.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I'll give the same advice that was given to me: learn as much as you can, as fast as you can. I would say you're smarter than people will give you credit for, and you have the skills and the capabilities to do the job. You just have to trust your instincts and move forward. There's no right or wrong way on a lot of things. It's about finding that opportunity and then taking as much advantage of it as you can. Sometimes the opportunity comes in the form of tragedy, as evidenced by my exhibit. You're not going to get to pick and choose what's going to happen in your life. You only get to pick how you react to it and how you handle it. I think handling things with ease and grace, keeping your hustle going, and believing in yourself is key. You are your biggest advocate.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
We are truly at a new spot right now with AI transformation. I'm doing the same thing I've always done: learning as much as I can, as best as I can, about AI, but AI is faster than me. I just presented at the Legal Innovators Conference on AI transformation, and it's clear that this is the next frontier in legal technology. My pursuit is a director of innovation role, which is what I have been doing for my entire career, bringing innovation to law firms and finding that new technology and helping people lean into it.
