Her Story
About Helen
Dr. Helen Holton is a leadership strategist, executive coach (ICF-PCC), CPA, and author of Intentional Leadership: How to Drive Leaders, Visions, and Teams Forward. Known as The Perfectionism Liberator™, she helps high-achieving women leaders break free from the invisible pressures that often accompany success – the pressure to prove, the pressure to perform, and the quiet expectation to carry more than anyone ever acknowledges.
Her work is deeply personal.
After experiencing firsthand how demanding environments can slowly wear down even the most capable leaders, Dr. Helen decided that the next chapter of her life would be spent helping women reclaim their voice, restore their confidence, and lead with clarity, courage, and peace.
With more than three decades of leadership experience across corporate finance, public governance, nonprofit leadership, and executive coaching, she brings both strategic insight and lived wisdom to every room she enters. As Founder and CEO of Intentional Leaders Alliance, Dr. H. equips leaders to align their purpose, passion, and leadership so they can rise without losing themselves in the process. A former Baltimore City Councilwoman and current Chair of the Baltimore Employees’ Retirement System Board of Trustees, she understands leadership from the inside out—where policy meets people and pressure meets purpose.
Her message is simple but powerful: When women are liberated from perfectionism and pressure, their leadership becomes undeniable… and the rooms they enter are never the same.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Helen
01What do you attribute your success to?
Leadership lessons learned along the journey. As an author, I was able to see myself through the stories of others: I am technically strong in governance, finance, board leadership, and pension oversight, which affirmed me as an effective collaborator, team player, and leader. Holding titles and roles was never about the office held. It was about shaping systems. Leading a national nonprofit wasn't about visibility. It was about influence with integrity.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
"Don't shrink to fit rooms that can't afford my capacity."
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Here are three:
- Master your craft with excellence.
- Don't confuse over-functioning with leadership.
- Guard your interior life.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Two of the biggest challenges in my field today are market saturation and AI overload. Opportunities lie in finding your niche in a crowded, noisy environment.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity. Stewardship. Faith. Excellence.
