Her Story

About Jasmine

I've been in the legal industry since 2017, starting with an internship at Georgette Miller & Associates, a small bankruptcy law firm in New Jersey, while I was in college. Working on the debtor side really inspired me because I had family members who had to file for bankruptcy, and helping people get financial freedom and feel this weight lifted off their chest was meaningful to me. From there, I worked at Freedom Mortgage Company in their bankruptcy and legal default department, helping consumers in bankruptcy with workout plans. I took a brief break to work at Wounded Warrior Project for about a year, which I enjoyed because I come from a background of all veterans - my mom, my dad, my grandfather. But I realized my real passion was with legal, so I moved to Stradley Ronin as a legal assistant in their consumer finance litigation practice, doing court filings and small drafting. Then I went to Ballard Spahr on the regulatory side, where I found my mentor, Mark Ferletti. When Mark and the entire consumer finance practice moved to Troutman Pepper, I joined them there as a practice assistant for about 2 years, then transitioned to a litigation paralegal for about a year. I didn't really enjoy the work-life balance of the firm, but I enjoyed the experience and seeing different cases ranging from FCRA violations to bankruptcy violations. Now I'm Legal Operations Manager at Sunbit, a fintech specializing in buy now, pay later financing for needs like dental costs and eye care, helping people with subprime and prime credit. I was promoted to this role within less than a year, which also meant relocating to the West Coast from the East Coast. In my current role, I work with our team supporting whatever they need - I help with licensing, exams and audits, litigation tracking, and I have a project manager role ensuring the team operates smoothly and connects with other departments. I'm tracking forward to maybe a Director of Compliance role as my next step.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell her to be prepared to work hard, but that the work is rewarding in the end, the hard work is rewarding in the end. I would tell her that it's challenging at times, but I think that if you have the ambition and the drive, the challenge is worth it, and it's what you'll thrive on. I would also tell her to be open-minded, because you never know what's going to come your way, you never know where you're gonna land. I never thought I would land where I am. And don't burn out - I can't emphasize that enough. Don't burn out, because it's so easy to do in this field. I think there's this culture where it's like work, work, work, work, work, and I would also just want her to understand that it's okay to take time for yourself. It's okay to shut it off on the weekend or at night.
