Her Story

About Joanna

Joanna Rengering serves as a lead in the Hurricane Helene disaster recovery efforts across northwestern North Carolina. Based in the Boone office, one of three regional recovery hubs, she oversees a team of case managers who help low-income families navigate the application process, determine eligibility, and access grant funding for the repair or replacement of manufactured and site-built homes.

With more than 30 years of leadership experience, Joanna has built a diverse career spanning law enforcement, hospitality, retail operations, and disaster recovery. Her expertise includes operations leadership, production management, workforce development, process improvement, and the creation of standard operating procedures that support organizational efficiency and growth. Throughout her career, she has successfully recruited, hired, onboarded, and developed hundreds of employees and contractors, establishing high-performing teams focused on operational excellence and customer service.

One of Joanna's most notable professional accomplishments was rising from sales associate to general manager of a firearms retail store in just three months, where she successfully led efforts to restore profitability and strengthen overall operations. She credits her success to valuing people, managing time effectively, and building strong relationships. While business achievements have been rewarding, she considers helping employees grow and succeed professionally to be her greatest accomplishment.

Passionate about mentoring the next generation of leaders, Joanna actively supports young women entering the workforce, many of whom are recent college graduates or transitioning into new careers. She draws inspiration from her husband, a 32-year law enforcement veteran and academy instructor whose commitment to service and leadership has influenced her own approach to developing others.

Joanna's advice to young women pursuing leadership opportunities is simple: don't wait until you feel completely qualified. Embrace opportunities to learn, take calculated risks, build meaningful professional relationships, and step outside your comfort zone. Growth and success often come from having the courage to pursue opportunities before you feel fully ready.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Joanna

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to building relationships, earning trust, and focusing on people rather than profits alone. Strong business results are important and I've been fortunate to achieve many throughout my career, but what has brought me the most satisfaction is helping others succeed. Whether through mentoring, coaching, or creating opportunities for growth, I've found that the most lasting measure of success is the positive impact you have on the lives and careers of others.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to never let someone convince you that your goals are unattainable because they're "not that simple." Great achievements require dedication, persistence, and personal growth, but they're often accomplished by people who are willing to put in the work day after day. I've found that hard work, continuous self-improvement, and a commitment to learning are the foundations of long-term success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the workforce is simple: don't wait until you feel fully qualified before pursuing an opportunity. Too often, talented people talk themselves out of applying for a position, pursuing a promotion, or taking on a new challenge because they don't meet every requirement. As I like to say, "Take the BIG bite now, learn to chew later!"

Focus on continuous learning, be willing to take calculated risks, and understand that growth happens outside your comfort zone. Invest in relationships, build a strong professional network, and don't be afraid to make your voice heard. Be loud. Be seen. Hard work and talent matter, but people need to know who you are and what you bring to the table. Nobody is going to pay attention to the mouse in the corner. Step forward, speak up, and embrace opportunities that challenge you. The greatest growth often comes from taking a chance on yourself before you feel completely ready.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge I see is leading people through difficult situations while recognizing that everyone communicates, learns, and responds differently. Being a good leader today requires flexibility, patience, and the ability to coach employees in a way that helps them succeed.

The biggest opportunity is that organizations are realizing operations isn't just about numbers, productivity, and profitability, it's about people. We're seeing more women step into operational leadership roles, even in traditionally male-dominated industries, and they're bringing a balanced approach that combines accountability, relationship-building, and employee development. I believe the future of leadership belongs to people who can deliver results while also investing in their teams, and that creates tremendous opportunities for women entering the field.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

For me, it comes down to integrity, a strong moral compass, people, and relationships. I've always believed that how you treat people matters more than any title, paycheck, or achievement. Whether I'm making decisions at work or in my personal life, I try to do what's right, even when it's difficult, and to lead with honesty, fairness, and respect.

I value being someone others can trust, investing in meaningful relationships, and helping people grow. While business results are important, I've found the greatest fulfillment in mentoring others, watching them build confidence, and helping them achieve their goals. I also believe strongly in continuous learning and self-improvement because growth never stops. Those values have guided me throughout my career and continue to shape the way I lead today.
