Her Story

About Kara

I have been in my field for the last 10 years, having just celebrated my 10th anniversary since graduating from college. My career path has been a combination of purpose, preparation, and evolution. I've worked across various fields including administrative support roles, operations, media, ministry leadership, and community-centered spaces, and each experience has sharpened different strengths in me. I realize I'm most fulfilled in roles where I can bring structure, leadership, vision, and genuine impact to people and organizations. I've invested heavily in my growth through higher education, leadership development, and nonprofit management training, because I believe that influence should be stewarded responsibly and purposefully. Right now, my path is centered around building meaningful work, expanding my influence with intention, and continuing to create spaces that empower and support others, specifically young women that are coming up. I'm very passionate about purpose-driven leadership and making sure that everything that I build is with both excellence and heart behind it. I currently work in the provost office at Charles Drew University, the only HBCU in Southern California on the West Coast with a 1% acceptance rate. I chose to work here specifically because it's in alignment with my purpose as the founder of God's Chosen Girl. My main expertise is in leadership, support, operations, and purpose-driven community building, and I naturally bring structure, organization, communication, and vision into every space that I'm a part of. At the core is my commitment to excellence, authenticity, and helping people and organizations grow in a meaningful way.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say the Lord. I'm a woman of faith, and my faith has kept me going. It's why I entitled the organization God's Chosen Girls. We believe that God placed this mission and this vision on my heart, and just adhering to Him, and listening to Him, and knowing that everything happens the way that it's supposed to. I would say my biggest encourager is God, my family, and my support system.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

What is your why? I would ask them to ask themselves, what is their why, because that's what's going to be what drives them and what keeps them going when it gets hard, when you can't necessarily get the grants or the fundings that you apply for, when you don't necessarily have the operational support. I would say to stay committed to your growth, even when that journey doesn't look like everyone else's, and I think staying committed to the vision that you have is so important when no one else can see it. I encourage people to be intentional about their environments and their relationships, about alignment, peace, and just keeping God first.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say it's really difficult to secure funding more than it's ever been. People like the idea of helping, but when it comes down to actual resources for these young ladies, there are a lot of hoops that I have to jump through. I've been blessed to have people give to me and see the mission based on relationships, but from an overall standpoint, I would say from 5 years ago, when I would see my girlfriends in their nonprofits securing funding with their grant writers, it's a lot more difficult. It seems like there are a lot more hoops to jump through right now.
