Her Story

About Kathy

Kathy Tuccaro is an award-winning Heavy Equipment Operator with Imperial Oil, where she has spent more than 13 years operating some of the largest mining equipment in the world within Alberta's oil sands industry. Working in a demanding and highly technical open-pit mining environment, she operates massive haul trucks, dozers, graders, and other specialized equipment that require exceptional skill, focus, and commitment to safety. A two-time Ambassador for Women award recipient, Kathy has become a recognized advocate for women in non-traditional careers, demonstrating through her own success that determination, resilience, and self-belief can break barriers and create extraordinary opportunities.

Prior to entering the mining industry, Kathy built a career in nursing before experiencing a profound personal and professional setback that changed the course of her life. After facing homelessness, addiction, and the challenges of overcoming decades of trauma, she committed herself to recovery, personal growth, and rebuilding her future. Through a career-planning program, she discovered an aptitude for heavy equipment operation and was selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants to attend training through Women Building Futures, a nonprofit organization that helps women pursue careers in skilled trades. The experience transformed her outlook and revealed strengths she never knew she possessed, ultimately leading to a successful career in one of the most demanding sectors of the workforce.

Today, Kathy is also an accomplished author, motivational speaker, and co-host of the Women Road Warriors Talk Show, where she shares inspiring stories of leadership, perseverance, and personal transformation. She is the author of Dream Big!, an inspirational book available in multiple languages, as well as the children's book The Mystical Swordsman of the Sugmad. Through her speaking engagements, media platform, volunteer work, and advocacy for mental health and workplace wellness, Kathy empowers individuals to overcome adversity, embrace their potential, and pursue lives defined not by their past circumstances, but by the possibilities they choose to create.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kathy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, self-belief, and the decision to rebuild my life from the ground up. At 40, after overcoming alcoholism, homelessness, and the long-lasting effects of trauma, I began a transformation through opportunities like Women Building Futures, where I was selected as one of 16 women from 158 applicants and learned to operate heavy mining equipment an experience that fundamentally changed how I saw my own potential. That moment helped me unlearn years of limiting beliefs and replace them with confidence, discipline, and a growth mindset. From there, I built a new path forward as an award-winning podcaster with Women Road Warriors, an author of Dream Big (translated into multiple languages), and the founder of a work boot recycling program that has supported thousands in need, while also speaking at shelters and schools and continuing to support Women Building Futures. My success comes from choosing courage over fear and believing that personal transformation creates a ripple effect that can uplift families, communities, and future generations.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to trust your own voice, listen to your heart, and believe in your ability to succeed. You will encounter people who question your place in a male-dominated field, but your path is defined by your mindset, not by others’ expectations. Courage already exists within you; it simply needs to be nurtured and brought forward. Early in my own journey, I struggled with low self-esteem and past trauma, and even experienced moments where those memories resurfaced in overwhelming ways while I was on the job. In that moment, I made a conscious decision to reclaim my power and remind myself that my past does not define my future. I chose to focus on my strength, my progress, and my right to be there. From that point forward, I replaced negative thoughts with positive action and confidence, and it changed everything. My message to every woman is simple: claim your power, own your space, and never underestimate the strength you already carry within you.
