Her Story

About Kayleigh

I grew up on Martha's Vineyard, and ever since I got into high school, my goal was just to do as much as possible since it's very secluded there, and also give back to the community. I studied media and marketing in college at Lasell University, and that's what I have been doing - sports media and marketing with the Martha's Vineyard baseball team. I started with food operations and worked my way up. Last year, we didn't have an assistant GM, so I was able to step into the role and learn the duties that it required, and I loved it. Being the assistant GM while in college is probably my most notable achievement - it's a full-time role that I'm also doing as a full-time student. I work at a baseball field in a small office that we share with the high school. They have practices in the morning, our players from college get there in the afternoon, and on game days, I call all the interns 2 hours before games start, set everything up, oversee all the interns throughout the game, make sure everything's going well, clean up everything, and send them on their way. I'm graduating this Saturday with my bachelor's degree, and I'm probably one of the youngest GMs in the field.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I grew up on Martha's Vineyard, and ever since I got into high school, my goal was just to do as much as possible, since it's very secluded there. I also wanted to give back to the community as well. Growing up in such a small, secluded place really drove me to seek out every opportunity I could and to make a meaningful impact where I'm from. I consistenly go back to Martha's Vineyard to speak with photography classes about opportunities on and off Martha's Vineyard.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Fake it till you make it, and just keep going. I think a lot of the sports industry just wants you to be able to learn as much as possible, and you just have to be open and flexible with literally everything. Arrive early and stay late. That's been the advice that has really guided me through my career so far.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Connect with everyone. Everyone wants to help you. Other women want to help and see you succeed. I would say just don't be scared - the imposter syndrome is real, but don't let it fool you, because it's not true. Building those connections and believing in yourself are so important in this industry.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think the biggest challenge is that a lot of people are not hiring right now, and the people who are hiring are very competitive. They look at internships - how many internships have you had? I think it's less about education and grad school, but more about how much learning experience you have. The emphasis on practical experience over formal education is really shaping how people enter and advance in the field.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Definitely creativity, flexibility, and problem solving, or critical thinking. These values guide how I approach both my professional responsibilities and my personal life, helping me navigate the many challenges and opportunities that come my way.
