Her Story

About Kiara

I've been working in entertainment and marketing for about 8 years, and my main expertise is producing movie trailers for Disney and Pixar. I create trailers, sizzles, internal spots, and content for the company, with a special focus on opportunity and inclusion initiatives like Black History Month and AAPI Month. My passion for movies and TV, specifically trailers, started when I was a kid - my family would have movie nights and we'd watch trailers together, which really inspired me. I earned my bachelor's in TV and film production, and right after college, I started at Disney at ABC News doing trailers for different news programs before joining the front studio. One of my proudest achievements was breaking the record for the most watched animated teaser trailer in a 24-hour span with Inside Out 2, and then we broke our own record again with Moana 2. My team is mostly women producers, with only about 2 male producers, which has been great. I believe that creativity is subjective, so it's important to always believe in your ideas and speak up, because you never know what could work and change the trajectory of a campaign.

Ten minutes with Kiara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think having a grounded family and friends has been really important to my success. Letting them hear me rant about things keeps me grounded, and it made me realize that at the end of the day, it's just entertainment and it's supposed to be fun. We don't perform open-heart surgery, so as long as you're having fun with it, I think that's what I attribute to my success - just remembering that it's entertainment. My family really helped guide me from the beginning through their support and our movie nights together, which sparked my passion for this work.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is to just believe in your creative and have passion for whatever you're going into, whatever field it is. When you have that passion, it won't feel like a job, it'll just feel like a passion project. I think that's what has made me excited about each project that I've worked on and helped me maintain my passion for the work. This advice has really shaped how I approach my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice would be to always believe in your creative and believe in yourself, and always be yourself. I think that's the main thing, because creative is very subjective, so if you have an idea and you think it could work, always speak up, because you never know. So my advice is just believe in their ideas and be able to back them, because they could work and change the trajectory of a campaign. Don't be afraid to voice your creative vision.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think when it comes to opportunities, the opportunities are great now, especially because everyone is going more towards digital marketing and what creates a viral moment. People are realizing that trailers are really important for your movie or your show to be successful. With the rise of social media and different platforms, people are paying attention more, and that's where I think the opportunity will come from. The challenges would definitely just be the amount of content, because there's a lot of competing studios and different things, but when it comes down to it, I feel like the opportunity outweighs the challenges.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family is number one for me - I put them above everything when it comes to work. I also really value taking care of yourself and mental health, and being there for yourself first so that you can be there for other people. That's my number one value in my personal life. In my professional life, being a team player and building people up around you is very important to me. I've had opportunities where colleagues and bosses have built me up along the way, which has been great, and now I'm able to do that for interns and people coming in and starting their career. I take them under my wing and teach them, because that's what I was able to receive.
