Kristi Ojala is a seasoned safety professional and mining industry expert with over a decade of hands-on experience in underground operations. Beginning her career as a mechanic after earning an Associate of Applied Science in Diesel Technology from Great Basin College, Kristi quickly developed a deep understanding of heavy equipment maintenance and mobile operations. Her technical skills, combined with a commitment to workplace safety, laid the foundation for a career dedicated to protecting her colleagues and advancing industry best practices.

Over the years, Kristi has held progressively responsible roles in underground mining, including Underground Mobile Maintenance Trainer, Underground Operations Training Coordinator, and Underground Training Supervisor at Barrick Gold Corporation. She currently serves as Safety Supervisor at Redpath USA Corporation, where she leads initiatives to strengthen safety culture, train mine rescue volunteers, and implement systems that ensure safe operations across multiple mining sites. Her colleagues consistently recognize her for her expertise, leadership, and willingness to mentor others, making her a trusted figure in the mining community.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my passion for the field and my commitment to safety and education. I began my career in 2007 working in mechanics, and over time, I transitioned into underground mining safety. Ensuring that everyone remains safe on the job is a responsibility I take very seriously. I also find great fulfillment in teaching others the skills and tasks necessary to thrive in the mining industry, helping to develop both their competence and confidence.

The best career advice I’ve ever received is simple but powerful: never give up. No matter the challenges or obstacles, persistence and determination are key to achieving your goals and growing in your career.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are integrity, dedication, and a commitment to helping others. I strive to approach every task with responsibility and care, especially when it comes to ensuring safety and mentoring others in my field. Outside of work, I enjoy attending car shows, which allows me to relax, pursue my personal passions, and connect with others who share my interests.
