Her Story

About Linda

I currently work for the COO of Munich RE, USPNC, where I serve as Senior Legal Assistant and Operations Administrative Coordinator for the Princeton office in New Jersey. I've been in support operations for over 25 years, and throughout my career I've learned that beside skill, knowledge, and education, you have to be accessible, approachable, and able to work with a multitude of different personalities. In my current role, what I value most is collaboration and inclusion. I have an admin who reports to me, and even though I'm her manager, I'm always, first and foremost in my heart, an assistant. I know where she comes from and what she deals with, and I always take that into consideration before asking or requiring her to do anything. I put myself in that position because I've lived it throughout my career. Working with people as business partners, side by side, is something that has grown so much within this role. I'm less micromanaged here, so I'm enjoying it more. One of my most notable achievements was helping organize and put together a 150-plus town hall that included Jamie Dimon as the keynote speaker at JPMorgan Chase two years ago. That was everything - calendar, catering, rooms, AV, presentations, handouts, giveaways, name tags - soup to nuts, overseeing everything and pretty much doing at least 85% of it myself. That's been my career - wearing all the hats. Even though I wanted to move away from that, it just always seems to come back, and you know what? It just works.

Ten minutes with Linda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to great mentors - both men and women across the board, in finance, in administration, administrative work, in business management. It wasn't necessarily about having them outwardly teach me, but a lot of observation. I kept my eyes and ears open and absorbed and learned as much as I could from watching them. Paying attention to these mentors and really observing how they worked has been key to my success throughout my career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I was told very early in my career that beside my skill and beside my knowledge and education, you have to be accessible, approachable, and to be able to work with a multitude of different personalities. That advice has stuck with me throughout my entire career, and it's something I feel I've really developed - the ability to pretty much work with anyone.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Listen to yourself and listen to the way you feel. If you feel that you're not being treated as you should, or you feel like you're not getting the breaks you should, or if you feel that being a woman in comparison to a man doesn't seem right - don't just sit there. Either move on, or try to fix it, or figure out different avenues. Don't get complacent within your role. If you really feel like there's something else for you, if you want to do education later in life, go for it. Don't let people tell you you're crazy or question why you're getting your degree now or what you're trying to achieve. Achieve what you want to achieve, no matter what. Don't let anybody stop you.
