Her Story
About Lucia
I work in radio and marketing, which is my first position in this field, coming up on a year in July. I came from a retail management background, working in upper management at companies like Barnes & Noble and Ulta Beauty. I went back to school to finish my degree because I wanted more flexibility and stability in my schedule to spend time with my son. What drew me to marketing is that everybody markets themselves differently, and how you market yourself creates this perception and idea. I really love being able to help other companies put their message out into the world the way they want it to be received. My boss Katie Ewell has been an incredible mentor, especially early on, holding my hand through understanding all the different nooks and crannies of radio and broadcasting. Almost all of my coworkers have been in radio marketing for 10 plus years, and Katie really helped me understand how things work and the functionality of the technology behind it. One of the biggest challenges I face is having enough hours in the day. There's always an active to-do list, priorities that bump things up, and it's about getting everything done as quickly and efficiently as possible while also finding time to turn it off and be present with my family.

Ten minutes with Lucia
01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
To not be discouraged, honestly. Marketing and just sales in general, sometimes you get a lot of people who just close the door really quickly, and it's just to not be discouraged by that. It might not be the best opportunity for them, but you'll find someone where you can change their entire business and their life with it. So just not to be too discouraged too quickly while still learning. Always know that there is a light always up. Some days are harder than others, especially when you're talking to a lot of different people and doing all these different meetings and things, sometimes the day seems never-ending and just kind of seems really glum, and then the next day, you'll get that call that changes everything for you.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Having enough hours in the day is one of the biggest challenges. There's always an active to-do list, there's always priorities that bump up things in the list, and it's just being able to get everything done as quickly as possible and as efficiently as possible. One of the challenges I see a lot is not necessarily directly with me, but I see a lot of challenges in smaller businesses being able to get their truths out, finding the right path for marketing and things like that. You have to find that time to turn it off. I have a small son, so it always feels like you have more and sometimes you don't have the time to do it.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I find kindness to be incredibly important. I love working with different non-profits and working with a ton of different organizations that genuinely are built upon the idea of being kind and helping people. I think that it's incredibly important, especially in everyday life and in the world today, to have those types of values. If I had to choose one, I would definitely say kindness, and just the honesty that comes with kindness. I think that's very important.
