Marcie Bianco
Marcie Bianco, PhD is a writer, editor, lecturer, and cultural critic based in Greater Boston, Massachusetts. She is the author of Breaking Free: The Lie of Equality and the Feminist Fight for Freedom, a paradigm-challenging work that argues equality alone cannot secure liberation and offers a framework for reclaiming freedom from ideological constraints. Across essays, books, and public scholarship, Dr. Bianco advances bold critiques of gender, politics, culture, and media, positioning herself as a leading voice in contemporary feminist thought.
From May 2018 to April 2025, Dr. Bianco served as print editor of Stanford Social Innovation Review, where she shaped global, cross-sector conversations connecting journalism, philanthropy, and social innovation. She previously held editorial leadership roles at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University and continues her long-standing affiliation as a features writer with the Women’s Media Center. Her commentary has appeared in outlets including Vanity Fair, CNN, DAME, and The Advocate. In addition to publishing her own thought leadership, she teaches university courses on philosophy and intellectual movements, mentors and edits op-eds through The Op-Ed Project, and accepts contract editing engagements.
With more than 20 years in her field—including roughly 15 years devoted to public-facing intellectual work after leaving academia—Dr. Bianco specializes in thought leadership and paradigm-busting scholarship aimed at reshaping public conversations about freedom, equality, and justice. She is known for writing about cultural and political trends in advance of their broader public emergence, including critiques of how “equality” can be weaponized to undermine equity initiatives. Her practice of “academic translation” makes rigorous scholarly arguments accessible and impactful for broad audiences. She holds a BA cum laude in Government from Harvard University, an MSt in Women’s Studies from University of Oxford, and an MA and PhD in English Literature with certification in Women’s Studies from Rutgers University.
