Marion Beckerink is a dedicated attorney and community advocate with more than three decades of experience in legal practice and nonprofit development. She currently serves as a pro bono immigration attorney, certified by the Executive Office for Immigration Review, representing individuals and families in asylum, refugee, and family-based immigration matters. Throughout her career, Marion has been guided by the belief that the law, at its best, is a tool for healing, justice, and human dignity—an ethos she demonstrated during her tenure as a federal court staff attorney and later as Director of Development at the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown, New York.

A lifelong learner, Marion earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Dickinson College, where she was active in the Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honor Society, and later earned her Juris Doctor from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law while working full-time. Her professional journey spans roles in the Department of Defense, federal courts, higher education administration, and nonprofit development. She has consistently leveraged her legal expertise and leadership skills to advance organizational missions, foster community engagement, and create meaningful impact for those she serves.

Marion’s commitment to service extends beyond the courtroom. She has held leadership positions on multiple boards, including the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County and the Chautauqua County Humane Society, and actively supports initiatives that aid immigrant integration and children’s welfare, such as the New Neighbors Coalition and Crèche For Kids. Recognized in 2024 by the Volunteer Lawyers Project as a Distinguished Immigration Attorney, Marion continues to combine professional excellence with compassion, advocating for justice, equity, and opportunity in both her legal practice and her community work.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women entering the legal field to major in a subject they are genuinely passionate about and not feel pressured to follow a specific pre-law track. A broad liberal arts education can be especially valuable, as it exposes you to diverse disciplines and perspectives. Law school will teach you the legal doctrine you need; what matters most beforehand is developing a wide worldview. The more you understand society, relationships, and the underlying causes of conflict, the more effective you will be as a lawyer. That broader perspective allows you to better understand your clients and resolve disputes thoughtfully, using the law as a tool for justice rather than retribution.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In both my work and personal life, I place a high value on empathy, cultural understanding, and maintaining a broad perspective. I believe the law is a powerful tool to help people achieve justice and restoration, rather than simply serving retribution. Helping individuals with justifiable claims navigate the legal system is deeply important to me, and I strive to understand the relationships and root causes behind each conflict. This approach ensures that I can support others thoughtfully and fairly while fostering meaningful resolution.
