I eloped at 18 and skipped the traditional path. Instead of letting that define me, I kept reinventing myself and life became my classroom.

Her Story

About Mary

Mary Belden McGrath is the Co-Founder of Driven Leadership, where she designs and facilitates experiential leadership development programs for businesses, organizations, and collegiate athletic teams. With more than 24 years of leadership development experience—including over 16 years with Driven Leadership and eight years with another leadership organization—she specializes in helping individuals and teams improve communication, leadership effectiveness, conflict resolution, and organizational performance through transformational learning experiences. Mary developed the BOLD: Advanced Leadership program, an immersive two-and-a-half-day leadership experience that she has facilitated monthly for more than 14 years. She is certified as a Master Trainer of Experiential Leadership, Creator of Experiential Learning programs, licensed and certified to teach the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) (working as the only U.S. company licensed and certified to deliver the TKI Assessment training through Kilmann Diagnostics), Certified in the ADVanced Insights (DISC, Values, Attributes), and is also a certified Five Behaviors facilitator. Throughout her career, she has taught leadership programs for corporate organizations and on numerous college campuses, emphasizing practical application and lasting behavioral change. Although she did not complete a traditional four-year college degree, Mary completed community college coursework and numerous professional certifications while building her expertise through continuous learning and real-world experience. She credits her success to lifelong curiosity, refusing to settle, the guidance of mentors, and the unwavering support of family members who encouraged her personal and professional growth. Her work is grounded in authenticity, courage, faith, and a passion for helping others realize their full leadership potential while creating meaningful, lasting impact.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mary

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to refusing to settle for where I am and believing there is always another level of growth available. Staying curious and committed to lifelong learning has continually expanded both my personal and professional capabilities. I have also been blessed with people who believed in me before I fully believed in myself, especially my brother, who invested in my future by helping me attend an early leadership program. Just as importantly, I have intentionally surrounded myself with mentors and leaders who challenged me to think bigger, stretch beyond my comfort zone, and pursue opportunities I might otherwise have overlooked.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the most influential pieces of career advice I received came through John Maxwell's The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, specifically the Law of the Lid. A mentor helped me recognize that my own leadership capacity was limiting the growth of my business. That lesson taught me to identify my blind spots, change unhealthy patterns, ask for help when needed, and continually invest in my own personal development. As I grew as a leader, my organization was able to grow as well.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women to trust the dream that has been placed in their hearts and not allow fear, self-doubt, or imposter syndrome to keep them from pursuing it. Your challenges, setbacks, and failures often become your greatest source of wisdom and your most meaningful contribution to others. Seek mentors, ask for help, remain teachable, and never give up. One of my favorite leadership lessons comes from Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, particularly the story of "Three Feet from Gold." Many people quit just before their breakthrough. Stay persistent, continue learning, seek wise guidance, pivot when necessary, and keep moving forward.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges facing leadership development today is economic uncertainty, which often causes organizations to reduce spending on professional development. At the same time, artificial intelligence has made educational information widely accessible, creating greater competition for traditional training providers. Another challenge is transitioning from a referral-based business model to reaching new audiences in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

At the same time, I see tremendous opportunities. Organizations recognize the growing need for leadership development and effective change management. Our experiential learning model creates lasting behavioral transformation that cannot be replicated through AI or traditional content alone. As businesses continue seeking authentic leadership experiences that produce measurable results, the demand for engaging, people-centered development programs continues to grow.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my professional and personal life are authenticity, passion, courage, faith, health and vitality, and living with purpose. I believe true leadership begins with integrity and a willingness to continually grow. More than anything, I want to leave a meaningful legacy by helping others become stronger leaders, healthier individuals, and more impactful contributors to their families, organizations, and communities.
