Her Story

About Megan

I have been in technology leadership for 10 and a half years and in leadership within the retail space for almost 16 years. I do a lot of coaching and developing, with a real focus on the employee experience and mapping out what a career could look like within the industry. I come up with developmental projects and help pull out people's potential within organizations. This is what I did at Target, and it's what I continue to do at Apple. I'm really passionate about engaging employees and helping them build their careers, unlocking not just the right skill set and training, but also their leadership potential. I think leadership is something that can be developed and built, but it's also something that can be really natural. I stepped into a leadership role when I was young, and my bachelor's degree has a minor in leadership studies, so this has been a passion point of mine for almost two decades. I also volunteer within my church to mentor and help women, doing women's ministry leadership development for more than 20 years. My goal is to make a pivot into an HR, people culture, or talent development role, really focusing on how we inspire leadership within people and help them build their careers.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've been told a few times that I have what they call a chameleon ability to adapt to situations or my surroundings fairly quickly. I think that's something that's really helped me, just being moldable and flexible. I think that comes with patience. You have to be patient with not just yourself, but with others, as you get to know and understand them. People tell me all the time that I am one of the most patient people they know, and I do think that that is something that helped me. I think if everybody had a little bit more patience, they could probably find more success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to make mistakes. I think too often, we think of leadership and we think we need to be perfect. I think that's a very common thing women think. But we're not medical doctors, right? So taking some risk and having the courage to try and to fail, and being able to learn from those moments, I think really helps people step into their leadership so that they can start to build some of that confidence, because I think that's what's lacking. Some people don't have the confidence, and I think you build that through taking risk.
