It's rare that a veteran Amazonian like me gets genuinely surprised...in a good way. Yet there I was last Thursday, battle armor ready, preparing to defend my mentee in a meeting from what I assumed would be another corporate dragon—only to find myself face-to-face with that rarest of creatures: a truly invested manager. GASP!

This manager didn't breathe fire. Instead, they came equipped with validation, support, and genuine intention toward my mentee's professional growth. They had clearly done their homework, understanding my mentee's strengths, aspirations, and areas for development. In an environment where performance reviews often feel like checking boxes and "we'll look into that" is a common refrain, this manager's genuine engagement was a welcome change.

The Slack message I fired off to my mentee afterward tells it all:

“OMG! I kinda love your manager. He genuinely wants to make sure you have all the support you need to be awesome. We've agreed on your areas of growth. He's asked to have monthly check-ins with me about you. (Unheard of—in a really good way!!!) We can discuss more when you want.”

Reflecting on that meeting transported me back over a decade to Mike, my very own Dragon Slayer. At a company far, far away, this brilliant, perceptive soul set the bar for all managers to come—which, I'll admit, frustrated me to no end at first! There I was, determined to prove I could conquer every challenge solo, wielding independence like a shield. Having been run over, burned at the stake, and offered as tribute by terrible managers in the past, I had convinced myself that professional survival meant going it alone—a myth that Mike would eventually help me unlearn, one act of genuine support at a time.

Picture this: me, standing in the middle of the company cafeteria, having an all-out argument about his attempts to help me. I declared, "Wonder Woman flew alone! I don't need your help!” To which Mike—brilliant, perceptive Mike—delivered what might be the most professionally sexy line I’ve ever heard: "Yeah, but she still needed someone to fuel her jet. Let me be your ground crew and clear your runway."

I hereby declare "professional sexy" is now officially a thing! It's that spine-tingling moment when your manager sees your full potential, earns your trust like it's precious metal, and fights for your success like it's their personal mission. No HR warnings necessary—we're talking pure, unadulterated professional chemistry here!

The transformation wasn't instant or easy. Like a warrior lowering their shield, I gradually shed the protective armor built from years of bad manager experiences. Mike proved different from the hall-monitor managers of my past. He wasn't hunting for infractions or plotting career sabotage. He earned the title "Dragon Slayer" from my peers who watched him in action. In our world, dragons weren't mythical beasts—they were the very real challenges that threatened to derail careers: toxic politics, impossible deadlines, resource constraints, and those particularly obstinate stakeholders who seemed determined to block progress at every turn. You know the ones...

Mike was strategic, supportive, collaborative, and professionally ferocious when these "dragons" came for me. He'd draw his managerial sword without hesitation, combining political savvy with genuine advocacy to slay whatever obstacles blocked my runway. Whether it was defending my projects in leadership meetings, securing critical resources, or strategically navigating corporate politics, Mike proved himself a true Dragon Slayer time and time again. Our partnership wasn't just successful; it was legendary! He made me believe in great managers again.

Speaking of legends, imagine if we had a reality show for managers—"The Bachelor: Dragon Slayer Edition." Hear me out! Instead of roses, employees would award dragon scales to the most "professionally sexy" managers they've ever encountered.

Let's talk about leadership. And yes, I can hear the collective groan—another article on leadership. But stick with me. This isn’t about the inspirational-poster version. It’s about the truth we all know but rarely say out loud: good intentions don’t move people. Impact does.

Good intentions are about optics. They’re about being perceived as amiable, thoughtful, “one of the good ones.” It’s performative humanity. Like the neighbor who waters their front lawn every morning (even during a drought), keeping the greenest yard on the block…while their dog sits chained to a concrete slab behind the house. The front looks immaculate. The back tells the real story.

Some managers operate from that front-yard mentality. They want to be seen as good leaders. They want the reputation, the narrative, the applause. But intention without impact is just landscaping. Pretty, but useless.

Now think about the leaders who actually shaped you. The athletics coach who pushed you to run one more lap—not because they wanted to be liked, but because they knew you were capable of more. The teacher who handed you your first failing grade, then sat with you after school and built a plan to get you back on track. The mentor who refused to sugarcoat anything, who delivered truth with clarity instead of corporate jargon, who held up the mirror you’d been avoiding.

None of those moments felt “pleasant.” But they were undeniably kind. And they changed you.

Impact isn’t always gentle, but it is always generous. It’s the nudge, the stretch, the uncomfortable growth. It’s the leader who doesn’t care about looking good—they care about you becoming good.

The leaders I’ve learned the most from? Their lawns weren’t the prettiest. But they treated their dog like family.

A friend and mentee of mine recently spiraled into a loop about their next career move. They said, “I don’t want to be a manager again. But I know I won’t grow as a leader if I’m not managing people.” I actually laughed. Out loud. The idea that leadership only exists inside a manager title is one of the biggest myths we keep recycling.

I reminded them that most of my career at Amazon was spent as an individual contributor—and I still influenced directors, VPs, and entire global organizations. Leadership had nothing to do with my title. It had everything to do with my impact.

Just like that lawn has nothing to do with how someone treats their dog.

A few weeks ago, I co-hosted the farewell event for the corporate summer interns. Before they left, several hugged me and gave me handwritten thank-you cards. Every note mentioned mentorship, support, guidance they’d carry into their careers. After work, I sat in my drought-ridden backyard with Knox, my dog, and let myself feel it—really feel it.

I didn’t lead with good intentions. I led with impact. And they felt it.

Here’s the thing: leaders rarely have perfect intentions. But the ones worth following leave a mark. They shape endurance, confidence, clarity, resilience. They push you, challenge you, and sometimes frustrate you—but they change you—for the better.

Leadership isn’t measured by how you hoped to show up. It’s measured by how someone else stands taller because you did.

And if you’re out there leading—formally, informally, quietly, loudly—don’t obsess over being liked, or being perfect, or being perceived as good.

Intentions are a feeling. Impact is a legacy. Choose the one that lasts.
