Her Story

About Nicole

I've been in event planning for the past 3 years, but I've worked in the event space through different roles for the past 8 years. I originally attended school to be a film accountant, but I really did not enjoy it because I really liked to be outdoors. Then I got hired as an event planner, and I kept getting compliments from a lot of different companies, so I just decided to switch because I found something else I was good at, and I really hated film. I served as an event planner for Cal State Northridge for their sustainability department and their art and design department for a year and a half. As of the past 6 months, I've worked in hospitality for Cal State Northridge's concert venue, the Soraya. In my current role, I do safety checks and check in artists into their backstage when they come into the venue, and make sure any of their additional guests are also supposed to be backstage so we keep good security. I maintain the security cameras and provide hospitality to the artists, whether that be toiletries, preparing them meals, or ordering them other supplies that they might not have brought while touring. I won Employee of the Year in 2025 for being an event planner at the Cal State Northridge Sustainability Department because I would often do tasks without being asked. I completely reorganized our garage and our craft areas, and I made the first connections with our school to the company Lush and the company Trader Joe's. My department also received the Jolene Kessler Award, which is given to a department on campus that had the most amount of collaboration. We put on a Steve Aoki concert on our campus that had over 4,000 attendees.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Nicole

01What do you attribute your success to?

I'm an only child, and so when I was younger, I just wanted to try any single hobby at least once in my life, and so I feel like that instilled ambition and always wanting to do new things every day, and so I feel like that definitely gave me a lot of skill set. So, I feel like just being optimistic and always wanting to try new things.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say there's a lot of very niche roles that you can do, and a lot of times you can feel trapped in a job, so I would say, even if you feel like you're only gonna like it for a year, always try something instead of regretting later on in life that you didn't try it.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges, I would say, are due to there being a lot of political issues in the world. Sometimes different countries or different states, their tourism and hospitality jobs decrease, so sometimes that's fearful if you're in an area where there's less tourism. Over this past year, America has faced less tourism, so that kind of closes down a lot of the hospitality jobs that are available, so that's a negative, but an opportunity is, on the contrary, AI will never take over hospitality, because people always want to work with people when they're being taken care of, so that's a pro.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Definitely, the relationships you have with your coworkers and your higher-up admin, I feel like when you can connect on a deeper level other than just coworkers, then you're able to communicate with them, and conflict resolve a lot faster. And so, just workplace relationships.
