Her Story

About Nithya

I have been in healthcare IT for 20 years now. I started my career in 2006 right out of college when I was hired on campus by a software company and landed into a healthcare IT project as an analyst working on healthcare EMRs. It was all new to me, but I was able to quickly understand the nuances of the workflows and organizations. I was posted to a project in the United Kingdom for the National Health Services and worked in London for a few years, gaining direct experience working in hospitals and clinics doing EMR implementations. I moved back to India where I'm from and was there for a couple of years, then joined a managed care, managed services company where I continued as a senior analyst. I then moved to the United States and worked for one of the largest healthcare organizations in the United States for 10 years. Most recently, I moved into a senior executive leadership position with NorthBay Healthcare here in California. Throughout my career, I have always believed in smart work more than hard work, which helped me navigate and move quickly through positions. In every organization I've worked for, I am on one of their subject matter expert committees and automatically included in their Center of Excellence because of my work with peers, bringing out decisions and providing solutions. One of my strongest skill sets has always been my communication skills and my ability to build relationships, and conflict resolution is a talent of mine.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I have always believed in smart work more than hard work, which has helped me navigate quickly through my career. My strongest skill sets from the very first day of my career have been my communication skills and my ability to build relationships. Conflict resolution is a talent of mine. I would say put your heads down and do all that you can, and let success make the noise. Your goal should not be success itself - when I started my career, I was really expecting success every day because I was so young, but I learned that the wins come along regularly if you just put down your head, do everything you can, and stay strong. Success will just make itself known.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

One thing I would definitely say is, in every step that you take, you cannot expect success to just follow to your doorstep. Put your heads down and do all that you can, and let success make the noise. Your goal should not be success, and that's very hard. When I started my career, I was really expecting success in and out of every day because I was new into my career and so young, and it was like every day I would look at a win. But I think the wins come along regularly if you just put down your head, do everything you can, and stay strong. Success will just make itself known. Also, as we focus on our careers and our families, one thing is to keep ourselves strong - that's the key thing, your strength.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The two important things that are going to go a long way are compassion and integrity. Without compassion and integrity, nothing is going to work, because you're going to work with every person, not just within your organization but people outside your organization - everybody's going to make an impact. The true values that matter are to have some level of compassion and integrity, and I think everything else follows.
