Her Story

About Ranella

I've been singing since I was a child - I humbly say I was born to be a singer, singing even as a fetus in my mother's womb. That gift catapulted everything else that fell into place. I started performing professionally straight out of high school in Hollywood clubs, even though I was underage and had to be escorted to the stage to perform. I was one of the first Asian American artists performing all over Hollywood, and because of the way I looked, I was accepted in other cultures. I opened for major artists like Keisha Cole and Nelly. After high school, my mom wanted me to be a nurse, but we compromised - I went to UCLA to do what she wanted, but at nighttime I took music business classes. From those classes, I learned that to be as successful as possible, you need to learn anything and everything about your career path. I wanted to learn everything about the business - management, booking, promoting, marketing, administration, even AI. As a musician, I've had to support myself and do things as right as possible without losing my soul in this entertainment business, making sure I can still look at myself at the end of the day. I promised God that no matter what, I would not fail Him and would continue to fight for what I genuinely believe in. I sing the national anthem all over the country, a trend I started in 2015, including performances for the Lakers. I'm currently working with the Recording Academy on something I can't reveal yet, but it's about bridging representation for the Asian community in music. I've noticed there's still a lack of representation, and I want to bring people who deserve it to the forefront, whether I like them or not - if they deserve recognition, I'll make sure they get it. Right now I'm my own agent, representative, PR, and entire team, and I recently relaunched myself after completing a weight loss journey last year.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to God's purpose for my life. If it wasn't for His purpose, I wouldn't be here. I've tried to walk away so many times, and He keeps saying, nope, you're not done, nope, you still got stuff to do. This is beyond me - He's got to make sure my light is reaching this person, so that this person can reach these people, or that this person can reach that person, or this person can get married. There's a purpose beyond me that I can't even explain, and I know my story is still not finished. I've introduced people that have gotten married, and because of that marriage, that union brought forth so many positions and blessings to so many people. If I haven't accomplished anything else, that union of marriage is a blessing to be able to say these people met through me, and now they're thriving. It's the purpose that's beyond me. It's my family being able to see them happy. My nephews, when I get to sing the national anthem and they were little, they get to see their auntie doing her thing. Especially my mom, when she first saw me sing for the Lakers and she was about to cry - I literally just do it for more so, it's a part of something bigger than what I can imagine.
