Her Story
About Rebecca
My journey into chaplaincy began with a calling I felt at a young age, when I believe God told me 'I have a purpose for you, but you won't understand it at this age.' I went to seminary for counseling and worked as a substance abuse counselor for 14 years before transitioning to hospital chaplaincy 17 years ago. I've always been interested in what chaplains do, and I felt called to do more in ministry. In my day-to-day work, I love the variety. I visit with people and hear their stories, meeting everyone from homeless individuals to the very wealthy in our hospital setting. I'm there for Level 1 traumas, for people experiencing high anxiety, and for deaths at our hospital and hospice house. A big part of what I do is advocacy for patients and working with families. I also come alongside our staff, especially during difficult situations or when a new nurse hasn't seen a death or coding before. I make sure they do something healthy after their shift to help them process what they've experienced. Beyond my hospital work, I preach at a church 2 hours away a couple times, and I'm currently working on ordination and doing the discernment around that. I also run my own Mary Kay business, which is coming up on 8 years.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Having a good support group around me is essential, and being able to talk with my co-workers helps me process the difficult things I see and hear. I make sure I have ways to deal with stress that are relieving physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, which are really, really important for me. I prioritize self-care, getting a massage every 3 weeks whether I need it or not, doing water aerobics and running in the pool, and taking care of myself in multiple ways. I also value spending time with my family, my husband of almost 38 years, our two daughters, and our dog, as well as enjoying gardening, meal planning, and cooking.
