Her Story

About Renee

I always wanted to be in medicine of some sort. I was pre-med previously, and through that, I decided that wasn't quite the career path I wanted to take. I decided that I wanted to be a nurse and see if that route was the way that I wanted to do, but I knew that I always wanted to help people. I started nursing school and graduated in 2013. I took my first role as a med-surg nurse, and then worked through ICU and ER. ICU and the ER were a large part of my career, and I saw a lot of interesting and a lot of very sad cases. Currently, I am focused on transplant and bridging the gap between AI and transplant and medicine in general. I help patients start from the initial beginning of the referral process to all of their workups, to getting listed and transplanted. I also contact patients, communicate with them, answer any of their questions, and make them feel the most comfortable in order to proceed with transplant. I also revamp workflows and make sure that we're meeting all of the criteria and regulations that are required in regards to transplants. I'm back in school and almost finished with my master's in nursing and business through Purdue Global, where I'll finish with a double master's degree. I also own a small sourdough bakery business and volunteer at a horse rescue.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is don't doubt yourself. If you know you know it, then don't let other people try to convince you that you don't. Step up, and if you want to see change, then you have to be the one to drive that change sometimes, and don't be scared to do that.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Community is really important to me, whether that's family, friends, your neighborhood, or even the city you live in. Building a community where people feel comfortable to ask for help is important. I've been trying to work on that through food drives for our neighborhood and family-friendly events to help build that sense of community. I've always wanted to help people and help fix things, which is why I went into nursing in the first place.
