Her Interview

Ten minutes with Renee

01What do you attribute your success to?

I really attribute my success to my father, who passed away going on 3 years now. He was my role model and always believed in me, even more than I believed in myself at that point in time. He would always tell me that I was going to go far in life. He was super strict, very loud, Italian, and intimidating, but the words that he told you may not have always been what you wanted to hear, but they were what you needed. He always let the people that he loved know that he loved them. He helped me go down the right path and believe in my capabilities. My children have also changed my life for the better and made me want to be more so that I can give them what I didn't have growing up and bring them a level of success where they would never have to worry. And obviously my husband, allowing for me to be a strong woman and travel and continue to grow in my career. I would say those are the three call-outs: my father Louis, my children, and my husband.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I don't come from much. I'm a Philadelphia girl, but I was determined, and I never let someone tell me that I can't do something. The advice that I give a lot of people is don't allow for somebody to intimidate you and make you feel that you're incapable of doing something just because of where you came from, or maybe how you speak, or what you look like. None of that matters, as long as you're willing to put your best foot forward and continue to develop yourself. I feel like you could do anything you set your mind to. Don't allow yourself to be stuck in this bubble because of what others make you feel like you are capable of doing. The world is yours, you just need to take it by the horns and do everything that you possibly can. I would much rather have someone who has knowledge of the industry versus just the educational background. Push yourself and don't let yourself be limited by what others think.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being strong mentally is crucial to me. I believe in the ability to collaborate with multiple teams and leverage everyone's expertise. There are subject matter experts out there, and you don't need to be able to do everything, but you do need to be able to work with others and appreciate what everyone else is good at doing, finding a way to partner with them so that you can make the most of your role and not overwhelm yourself. I've learned over the years that I can work myself to the point where I burn myself out at times, and it's a learning experience. You take what you learn and try to incorporate that into your everyday life. I also believe in keeping humor and taking risks. I'm constantly trying to joke and keep myself out there. I never let someone tell me that I can't do something, and I'm constantly trying to make myself better.
