Rita Rosenthal is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Communication at Boston College, where she directs the public speaking curriculum. She has been part of the Boston College community since 1987, initially serving in a part-time capacity before becoming full-time faculty in 2002. In her role, she teaches public speaking and communication while also contributing to service work across the university, including mentoring students and supporting programs in fields such as nursing and health sciences.

Rosenthal’s academic journey began at Appalachian State University for her undergraduate studies, followed by a master’s degree in communication from Bowling Green State University. She also began doctoral studies before stepping away to focus on raising her children, later returning to higher education and building a long-standing career in teaching. Her early experiences on a collegiate speech team sparked her passion for communication and led her into coaching and ultimately a lifelong career in public speaking education.

Throughout her career, Rosenthal has emphasized ethical communication, mentorship, and student growth as core pillars of her teaching philosophy. She is known for creating learning experiences that help students overcome anxiety around public speaking while developing confidence and clarity in their communication. A breast cancer survivor, she also shares her personal experiences in speaking engagements to support and inspire others facing similar challenges. Guided by service, empathy, and a deep commitment to her students, Rosenthal continues to shape future communicators while fostering a supportive and values-driven learning environment.
