Her Story

About Roberta

I started my career with a bachelor's degree in journalism from Michigan State University, one of the best journalism schools in the United States, and began as a reporter in the Capitol Press Corps. Since 1975, I have been working in education advocacy, building a career that has spanned nearly five decades. I worked for the State of Michigan for 30 years and also served working for a member of Congress in the U.S. Capitol who represented Michigan. Today, when I do work, I work on contract for local school districts, taking school board members and superintendents to lobby on Capitol Hill and meeting with associations and the broad range of contacts I have developed throughout my career. My most notable professional achievement was saving Medicaid school-based services from being eliminated back in the 1980s when I was working for the Michigan Department of Education. I recently stepped down as president of the Michigan Political History Society, though I remain affiliated with the organization.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to having outstanding mentors in my life and to hard work. Throughout my career, I've always made it a priority to do my homework and research thoroughly. These mentors guided me and helped shape my approach to the work, and combined with my commitment to diligent preparation and research, they've been the foundation of everything I've accomplished in this field.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

To do your homework. Never say anything you don't believe to be totally true. And to be connected with a wide variety of people in your field who are knowledgeable. These principles have guided my entire career in education advocacy, and I believe they're essential for anyone who wants to be effective and maintain their credibility in this field.
