I learned that my introverted qualities weren't weaknesses. Solitude reconnected me with my values and strengths, and now it's where I feel most connected to myself.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Samantha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute much of my success to a genuine desire to help people thrive with compassion and adaptability. My career has taken me through technology and nonprofit leadership, and now health coaching. While those fields may seem different, the common thread has always been people: walking side-by-side, in partnership, understanding their needs, building trust and empowerment, and helping them navigate change. Success looks different for every person in coaching, from following through more often, adapting after learning something new, building confidence, to moving closer to their vision for health and wellness.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is to discover what’s important to you, or your values, and then find ways to build that into your career. Not everyone can do work that is a perfect match to their values, but we can all find ways to align our work with our values. Life rarely follows a linear path and it doesn’t have to in order to be meaningfully aligned with what’s important to you. Every experience can teach you something and contribute to what comes next. I’ve made several pivots in my career from tech project management, to exploring nursing, to running my neighborhood foodbank before launching So Thrive Coaching. I now see all these pivots as part of the process of arriving here. I am bringing years of experience in leadership, problem-solving, customer service, and community building into a new chapter. I've learned to count the wins, stop comparing myself to other paths, and approach setbacks with adaptability and curiosity to support myself in moving forward.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

First, invest in credible training and learn the art of coaching. Coaching is about creating a supportive partnership where people discover their own motivations, strengths, and possibilities for change (not following yours). Second, appreciate the value of your previous experiences. Your unique background and perspective can be an incredible asset to you. And finally, practice what you coach: stay curious, stay in learner mode, and give yourself permission to grow.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I see an opportunity to make health and wellness coaching better understood and more accessible. Most people don’t know what health coaching is or how it can help them. When I have the opportunity to show, not just tell, what a coaching session offers, people realize how empowering it is to have a strong vision for their health and wellness, discover why it matters, what difference it will make, and how their strengths can support them in making change happen. People often come away from coaching sessions saying, “I can do it”, “I learned so much about myself”, “I feel empowered”, which is the foundation for taking next steps.

I'm particularly excited about opportunities to partner with wellness providers, human service organizations, schools, and other communities to bring coaching and wellness education to more people. Wellness is not a privilege reserved for those who can afford private coaching. I'd love to see coaching become an accessible part of how we support healthier individuals and communities.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I love this question because discovering my values is one of my favorite topics. I do an annual values check-in and I recommend everyone do this for their wellness because our values do change over time.

My values are:

  • Cultivate relationships
  • Practice compassion
  • Prioritize well-being
  • Pursue learning
  • Act with responsibility

These are central to how I approach both work and life. My own experience living with alopecia and complete hair loss has deepened my appreciation for aligning with my values as a way to strengthen my confidence, feel belonging, and reconnect with my identity. I want my life and work to reflect those values, whether I'm partnering with an individual client, supporting a community organization, or showing up for my family and friends—so we all can thrive!
