Her Story
About Samantha
I started my career path in school studying public relations because I've always been someone who enjoyed public speaking and meeting new people and meeting clients. I interned at ABC7, where I was able to really dive into journalism, being on camera, working on stories behind the scenes, and working on advertising for lottery tickets since those play a lot during the newscast times. That's what got me interested, and then once I figured out I didn't want to be in front of the camera, I said I still wanted to be in TV, but just behind the scenes. That's how I got into advertising tech. Since 2019, I've been working with bigger clients like iHeartMedia, making sure that their campaigns are being fulfilled through audio, connected TV, or linear TV. I think a lot of things fall under advertising, and there's so many things you can do. I work with clients, but you can be on the back end scheduling the commercials to go on, scheduling the NFL games. You can find your place in the advertising world because it's so big.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to dedication, perseverance, and a lot of support. The job market is very hard, putting yourself out there is very hard, and trying to convince someone that you don't know to hire you is very hard, so making sure that you're just your authentic self is key. I feel like I had a lot of support, and I feel like a lot of people can't say that, but I definitely had support in my career, whether it was from my family or my coworkers, coworkers that I met before, coworkers that I have now. I think everyone is just very supportive, so definitely dedication, perseverance, and that support system.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My biggest advice would just be to be yourself and don't be afraid of having a learning curve. I think a lot of things fall under advertising, and it can be a lot if you don't know a lot of terminology or one aspect of it, but just being open to learning the different aspects of advertising, because there's a lot that goes into it, will play a pivotal part in your career. I feel like I was just boxed in a corner with journalism, but under the umbrella is so many things that you can do, like working in advertising. I work with clients, but you can just be on the back end, scheduling the commercials to go on, scheduling the NFL games. You can find your place in the advertising world because it's so big. Don't be afraid to ask questions, because that's how you learn. In the beginning, I was a little nervous asking questions that I feel like may be repetitive or redundant, but asking questions is how you learn. Be open to being patient with yourself, learning, being open to everyone throwing a lot of information at you, and then finding your best way to retain that information.
