How can people build when everyone has to keep starting from scratch instead of starting from experience?

That is a question I continue to ask myself.

Throughout my life, I have seen talented, intelligent, and hardworking people struggle—not necessarily because they lacked ability or potential, but because they lacked access to the right guidance, education, resources, opportunities, and support at the right time.

We tell people to get a job.

• Go to school.
• Manage your money.
• Build good credit.
• Raise your children well.
• Take care of your health.
• Become financially stable.
• Start a business.
• Buy a home.
• Plan for retirement.
• Build generational wealth.

Those are great goals, but somewhere between telling people what they should accomplish and expecting them to accomplish it, we sometimes leave out something important:

Who taught them how?

There Is a Difference Between Information and Guidance

We live in a time when information is everywhere. You can search the internet and find thousands of articles, programs, organizations, and opportunities, but having access to information does not automatically mean a person knows how to navigate it!

Someone may know that credit is important without understanding how credit works.

A young person may know they should prepare for adulthood without understanding insurance, taxes, leases, workplace expectations, homeownership, or financial planning.

A parent may be doing everything possible to keep a household together while simultaneously trying to navigate relationships, different environments, employment, education, childcare, transportation, healthcare, and other systems.

Sometimes people don't need another person telling them what they should have done.

They need someone willing to say:

"Here is what I learned. Here is what I wish someone had taught me. Here is a resource that may help. Here is a mistake you may be able to avoid, and here is a place you can start."

That is the power of sharing experience.

The Education Life Gives Us Has Value

Some of our greatest lessons will never appear on a diploma.

I believe in formal education, and I also believe there is tremendous value in what people learn through employment, parenting, volunteering, caregiving, entrepreneurship, community involvement, relationships, successes, and simply navigating life.

For more than 25 years, I have worked and served across different service environments while also volunteering, mentoring, coaching, writing, connecting people with resources and opportunities, and learning something everywhere I have been.

• I have learned from my grandmothers.
• I have learned from coworkers.
• I have learned from coaches and mentors.
• I have learned from community members.
• I have learned from a variety of people from all ages and backgrounds.
• I have learned from being a mother.
• I have learned from mistakes.
• I have learned from opportunities.
• I have even learned from doors that did not open.

Every experience can teach us something.

The question becomes: What are we doing with what we learned?

Experience Should Be Passed Forward

Imagine what could happen if more of us intentionally passed our knowledge forward.

Instead of the next person spending ten years figuring something out, perhaps something you learned could help them understand it in one.

Instead of a young adult making an avoidable financial mistake because nobody explained something to them, perhaps we teach it before the mistake happens.

Instead of waiting until a family reaches a crisis to introduce them to resources, perhaps we provide practical education and navigation support earlier.

Instead of assuming people know how to navigate complicated systems, perhaps we create clearer roadmaps.

This does not mean doing everything for people.

It means giving people more tools to do things for themselves.

That distinction matters.

Stronger Communities Begin With Stronger Foundations

When we talk about improving communities, conversations often center on employment, education, housing, public safety, healthcare, and economic opportunity.

All of those things matter!

Communities are made up of people and households.

If individuals and families are constantly operating in survival mode, it becomes much harder to focus on long-term goals.

That is why I believe community empowerment must include practical education.

• We need to talk about employment and workplace skills.
• We need to talk about communication.
• We need to talk about money.
• We need to talk about credit.
• We need to talk about housing.
• We need to talk about entrepreneurship.
• We need to talk about parenting resources.
• We need to talk about emotional intelligence and problem-solving.
• We need to talk about how to find help before a situation becomes an emergency.
• Most importantly, we need to make that knowledge understandable and accessible.

Why This Became Part of My Purpose

My experiences eventually helped shape the work I am building through Visionary Connections LLC.

The idea is rooted in something simple: connecting people to practical education, resources, opportunities, and support while sharing lessons that may help make someone else's road a little easier to navigate.

I don't believe I have every answer.

I don't believe any one organization, program, or individual does.

I believe in connections.

• One person may have experience.
• Another may have a resource.
• Another may have an opportunity.
• Another may have professional expertise.
• Another may simply have the encouragement someone needs to keep going.

When those pieces connect, possibilities begin to expand. That is also why service means so much to me!

Service is bigger than customer service or a job title.

Service is how we show up, connect, and care—personally, professionally, and throughout our communities!

We Don't Have to Know Everything to Share Something

Sometimes people hesitate to mentor, teach, or share their experiences because they don't consider themselves experts, but you don't have to know everything to share something valuable.

• Maybe you know how to apply for college.
• Maybe you understand the home-buying process.
• Maybe you learned how to rebuild your credit.
• Maybe you know how to prepare for an interview.
• Maybe you understand a community resource.
• Maybe you learned an important lesson from a mistake.
• Maybe you know how to navigate a system that once overwhelmed you.

Somewhere, someone may be encountering today what you spent years learning yesterday.

Your experience could become part of their roadmap.

Starting From Experience Instead of Starting From Scratch

Imagine communities where knowledge continuously moves forward.

• Parents teaching children.
• Professionals mentoring young adults.
• Business owners helping new entrepreneurs.
• Organizations sharing resources instead of operating in silos.
• Older generations passing down lessons.
• Young people bringing new ideas and perspectives.
• Community members helping one another understand the systems around them.

Then the next person doesn't have to begin with nothing.

They begin with what someone else already learned, then add their own experience to it and pass that knowledge forward again.

That is how we build.

• Not by expecting every person to figure everything out alone.
• Not by criticizing people for what they were never taught.
• Not by continuously rebuilding the same foundation generation after generation.
• We build by sharing knowledge.
• We build by creating access.
• We build by providing guidance.
• We build through service.
• We build by connecting people to opportunities.
• We build by making sure the lessons we worked so hard to learn don't end with us!

How can people build if everyone has to keep starting from scratch?

They shouldn't have to.

The goal should be to help the next person start from experience!
