Her Story

About Sonia

I am from Puerto Rico and lived in New York until I was about [a certain age], then returned to Puerto Rico where I went to college and law school. I initially wanted to be a doctor, but when I started my first science course in college, I realized I wanted to do something where I could be the best and help people from a social perspective, which led me to law school. I graduated from law school in 1990 and joined the U.S. Navy, where I became a JAG officer. After that, I spent 12 years at the U.S. Attorney's Office, where I eventually became chief of the criminal division. My years at the U.S. Attorney's Office as a prosecutor were one of my most notable professional achievements. After leaving, I worked at a big law office in Puerto Rico for 4 years, then established a boutique law firm with my partner, Nerida Melendez, who was a former AUSA. We specialized in high-profile white-collar defense and conducted hundreds of corporate investigations for multinational companies in Latin America. Three years ago, I joined DLA Piper as a partner and currently serve as co-chair of the white collar and corporate investigations group. Currently, I do a lot of compliance work and corporate investigations, and my days involve preparing for interviews for ongoing investigations. What I love most about being a lawyer is helping people. I truly do love helping people, and at this stage in my career, I help educate and provide guidance on preventive measures. I've seen so many people's lives be destroyed by mistakes that we do, and companies being destroyed. The part that I most enjoy in my work is that preventive education, talking to people and providing them with live examples, practicable examples of what I have seen.

Ten minutes with Sonia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my hard work and being true to my values. My sense of justice has been fundamental, and I believe in just keeping your promises and being honest to people. Throughout my career, I've stayed committed to fairness and integrity, which have been the most important values in both my work and personal life.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to be myself. That simple advice has guided me throughout my career and has been invaluable.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the legal industry is to be authentic and be themselves. That's essentially my advice - just be who you are, and everything else would come. I believe that authenticity is key to success in this field.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge nowadays in what I do is based on the new DOJ policies with the Trump administration. There is a realignment of priorities and risk assessment for the companies that we provide services to. I think that's the biggest challenge right now, at least from the work that I do. As for opportunities, I see the chance to go into new fields of the law and do more litigation. There's also the opportunity to do more risk assessment from a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act perspective in Latin America, especially given the priorities for the new administration around issues like cartels.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are fairness and integrity. These principles guide everything I do, both professionally and personally. I also believe strongly in keeping your promises and being honest to people, and maintaining a true sense of justice in all my dealings.
