Her Story
About Sophia
I've been in the writing and communications field for about 10 years now. My main expertise is in technical writing and editorial work, which includes copy editing, proofreading, and creating efficient processes. I have a huge knack for efficiency, so I will often look at a system, find the gaps, and immediately my head will just spin finding solutions. I love to see the team succeed, so that's one of my motivations when I think of a system. I want to make a system more efficient so that everyone is able to complete their work more efficiently, with more ease, and in a more cohesive way. In my current role, a typical day looks like a combination of writing communications for the services that we provide, and supporting the people that we work with to ensure that they are able to access our services. There are also internal meetings to ensure that we're all on track, staying updated on any changes and meeting deadlines. My most notable professional achievement is my resilience. I've overcome quite a lot of personal challenges over the years, but I've continued to seek out opportunities that I believe would be beneficial for me in my future, and also opportunities where I feel that I am contributing to a bigger picture and a bigger purpose. That ability to just be tenacious and persevere has led me to find some really good opportunities, such as the one I'm at currently.

Ten minutes with Sophia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I am grateful to have a family that supports me, and I've definitely learned hard work and having a strong work ethic from my parents. On a personal level, I would say as well, my faith has definitely influenced how I've lived my life and overcome challenges. Yeah, I would say those two things, family and faith.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I think to believe in yourself, and to believe in what you bring, especially as a woman. I think we can sometimes face barriers that men might not face, but I think it's really important to know your strengths, your skill set, and to know that you are an asset to a team. And to believe in yourself, and to go into any opportunity with that mindset, I really do think it makes a difference.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage them to take all the opportunities that are presented to them, even if they're at the beginning of their career, even if it's not a paid opportunity. Because, especially with this career and this industry, it's all about experience, and I definitely think you can get experience, even if at the beginning you're not necessarily getting paid. It will pay off eventually.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think some of the challenges might be related to AI in any writing industry, whether it's more creative writing, or scientific writing, or whatever it might be. I think there are definitely a lot of changes. I do think AI can be a useful tool, so I think I see it as an opportunity to see where we can maybe meet some gaps. I definitely don't think AI can replace human work. I definitely believe in the value of human work. Yeah, so I think that would be a challenge, but also an opportunity. On the other hand, I guess the opportunity is just to continue to upskill, and also to find organizations and corporations that do align with that value for human work, and who don't necessarily want to replace an individual with maybe an AI tool.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I really value integrity, just like, as they say, really being congruent in how I live my life, living my life in a transparent way, in an honorable way. Definitely excellence. I do think our work is a reflection of ourselves, so I do take psychological ownership of my work, and I want it to be a reflection of my person, and I want it to be done very well, and to be done in a timely manner. Just dependability, I guess, would be the lead-up to that. Understanding that you're part of a team, and that other people rely on you, so just showing up to work and showing up for other people, and getting your work done well on time, so that people can depend on you. Respect and kindness, I think it makes a big difference when you work in a team, and people are respectful, and even just kind as well. I think it just boosts the morale of the team and makes everything easier. And I would say the last one, trustworthiness, and it kind of ties into all of them. I mean, just being someone that people can rely on, someone that people can depend on, and maintaining that level of confidentiality as well in work, in following policies and being someone that your managers or supervisors or teammates can trust in you, I would say.
