Her Story

About Stephanie

I started as an entrepreneur very young, doing hair at a young age. People noticed my hair was beautiful and would ask who did it, so I started doing people's hair at school. My mom told me if I had all these people coming through her house, I better be charging something because I was using her lighting and gas. That's when I first started charging my first $5 and $10 to do some of my friends' hair. Once I got to high school, I went to cosmetology school and got my license. I had small boutiques and a salon. I did hair for stars and had all the surrounding cities coming to me. I always kept a job alongside my entrepreneurial work - I was at the bank for 17 years. I went to school 2 years for social work and 2 years for business. I became a cook for a facility, a nursing home facility, and cooked for the bank. They actually tried to send me to school for cooking, but I wouldn't go because I was moving and doing a lot. Now I own Helping Hands Loving Touch, where I take care of the elderly and those in need. I go to different facilities and if they don't have an aide or someone caring for them, I have assemblies where they come down and I teach them small things to do while they're in their apartment or homes by themselves. I teach them how to get out of bed at night safely, how to work with dementia, and how to be more mannerable. I help them understand that it's okay to have help and to accept it and move on. Through my company, I've helped ladies become nurses, LPNs, RNs, nurse practitioners, and bank managers. I also do women's empowerment work that I've been doing for over 10 years, starting as small groups at church where I would motivate women who have been in recovery, have lupus, or are having marital problems, letting them know life is not over.

Ten minutes with Stephanie

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The advice that I give to young women all the time, and I always say this first, whatever you do in life, put God first. These things will follow behind that you want to do. If you can acknowledge where you're coming from, and if you can acknowledge that it's a higher being over you, I believe everything flows behind that. And then knowing what you want to do, studying what you want to do, and doing what you want to do. And you just, like I said, consistency makes a difference with anything in life.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The only challenges going on now is that so many people are opening agencies. Now where people are allowed to do what they really want to do, there's so many agencies out here. You just have to brand yours as best as you can, and let them know, hey, I'm still out here, and I feel like I'm a number one because I go above and beyond. You gotta know that you're that. You're that person. You're that company. Train your people as if they can be you. Because that's how I started off with my aides. I trained them as if I need y'all to work like I would.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Consistency is number one. Learn to focus on one thing first, and then other things will come. My values is really being consistent, because if you're consistent, you're letting yourself know, you're letting your mind know, this is what I want to do, this is what I'm going to do. And it's not even about what I want to do no more. If you're consistent in something, you're letting your body, mind, and soul know this is what you're going to do. So guess what? It has no reason but to follow it.
