About Tammie

Tammie Otukwu is a seasoned human resources and veterans' services professional whose career reflects more than three decades of leadership, public service, and advocacy. After serving 26 years in the U.S. Army, she transitioned into civilian service with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, where she now serves as a Supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist. In her current role, she educates veterans and VA employees on critical benefits programs, including disability compensation, pensions, healthcare, and educational opportunities, ensuring that those who served receive the resources and support they have earned. Her commitment to service is strengthened by her academic foundation, holding master's degrees in psychology and management from the University of Phoenix. Otukwu's military career began in the dental field, where she worked as both a dental assistant and dental hygienist before transitioning into human resources and personnel management. Over the course of her Army career, she earned multiple promotions while developing expertise in personnel management, team leadership, conflict resolution, and organizational effectiveness. A Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certified professional, she is recognized for her results-oriented approach, ability to build high-performing teams, and talent for identifying organizational needs and implementing practical solutions. Her experience spans military operations, workforce development, government administration, and veterans' advocacy. Beyond her professional responsibilities, Otukwu is a passionate advocate for veterans' mental health and successful transitions to civilian life. Drawing from her experiences assisting homeless veterans through Operation Stand Down, she authored War After the Military, a book that explores the challenges many veterans face after leaving active service while highlighting available resources and pathways to recovery. As a Certified Life Coach, she continues to encourage healing, resilience, and personal growth among veterans and their families. Through her writing, coaching, public service, and community involvement, Otukwu remains dedicated to improving the lives of those who have served while advancing awareness of the importance of mental health support for the veteran community.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Tammie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my unwavering faith in God, the values instilled in me by my family, and the resilience I developed through life's challenges. My father taught me discipline and perseverance, my mother demonstrated unconditional love and quiet strength, and my grandmother showed me the power of faith and prayer. Those lessons carried me through military service, personal setbacks, health challenges, and the difficult transition to civilian life. I have learned that success is not defined by the absence of adversity, but by the courage to keep moving forward with purpose, integrity, and a commitment to serve others.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was to never let obstacles determine my future. My father taught me that hard work, preparation, and integrity would carry me further than excuses ever could. My mother reminded me to trust God through every season, and my grandmother taught me to pray when life became difficult. Throughout my military career, I learned to keep showing up, continue learning, and never stop challenging myself, even when doors seemed closed. Those lessons taught me that success belongs to those who remain faithful, prepared, and willing to persevere when others give up.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Believe in your abilities before asking others to believe in them. Never stop learning, seek out mentors who will challenge you to grow, and don't allow barriers—whether based on gender, race, or circumstance—to define your potential. Excellence, preparation, and integrity will always distinguish you. Most importantly, remember that leadership is about serving others. When you lead with humility, resilience, and faith, you create opportunities not only for yourself but for the women who will follow behind you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges facing the military and veteran community today is ensuring service members receive the support they need after they remove the uniform. The transition to civilian life can bring unexpected struggles with identity, purpose, mental health, employment, and reconnecting with family and community. At the same time, I see a tremendous opportunity to reduce the stigma around these conversations, strengthen veteran support systems, and help service members recognize that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. By sharing our stories and building stronger communities, we can help veterans not just survive the transition, but truly thrive in their next chapter.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my personal life and my work are faith, integrity, service, perseverance, and compassion. My faith has been my foundation through every challenge, while integrity has shaped the way I lead and serve others. The military taught me the importance of discipline and accountability, but my family taught me that true leadership is rooted in humility, love, and service. Whether I'm mentoring veterans, supporting families, or encouraging others through my writing and speaking, my goal is to leave people stronger, more hopeful, and better equipped to overcome life's challenges. I believe success is measured not only by what we accomplish, but by how we uplift others along the way.
