Her Story

About Tashina

I work in surgery as a registered nurse first assist, and I've been doing this since 2011. I didn't know I wanted to be a nurse until later in life - I actually went to nursing school when my children were little. I was going to go into it before I had children, but there was a long wait, so I worked in a doctor's office for a long time, and then I decided to go back to school. I've been in surgery long enough now that I feel like I'm at a mentorship status where I can teach other people and kind of lead them in, and I really enjoy doing that. Nursing is a career path that you choose based off of caring for people, not based off what you can get in returns. You can't go into it with the idea that you're going to be this super successful person - your drive has to be taking care of people, because we're going to have to take care of people whether we get paid or not. We're going to have long hours and complex things that we're having to face, and a lot of times, there's no amount of money that would be enough to do some of the things that we have to do. But it's part of a calling.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my grandmother. She's just always been a positive influence in my life and an encouraging person. She has always made sure that I had the tools that I needed to be able to be successful.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think that it's a great career field to go into. It gives you different options and stuff like that. I think looking into the different options that you have, like, when you first get started, is beneficial. It'll help you, kind of, have an idea of where you're going in your future, and what areas to kind of lean towards as far as your practice. But you have to understand that it's a career path that you choose based off of caring for people, not based off what you can get in returns. You can't go into it with the idea that you're gonna be this super successful person - granted, yes, are there benefits and can you become successful? Yes. But at the end of the day, like, that can't be your drive. Your drive has to be taking care of people, because we're gonna have to take care of people whether we get paid or not. We're gonna have long hours, we're gonna have different things that come that are complex that we're having to face, and a lot of times, there's no amount of money that would be enough to do some of the things that we have to do. But it's part of a calling.
