Her Story
About Vanessa
Vanessa Serrano-Bernal is the Vice President of Global Renewals at Optro, bringing over 14 years of progressive experience in the Enterprise Software and SaaS industry. She began her career as a customer support agent at a five-person startup in the Bay Area and rapidly ascended through the ranks, demonstrating an exceptional ability to build, scale, and lead high-performing teams across multiple high-growth organizations. Her tenure at Mavenlink marked a pivotal turning point, where she was tasked with launching an entirely new Customer Success department from the ground up — developing the playbooks, KPIs, and team structures that would carry the organization past 300 employees. She later joined AuditBoard, now rebranded as Optro, where she played an instrumental role in scaling the company from $50 million to $250 million in revenue and growing its workforce from approximately 100 to 600 employees. Today, she oversees a $350 million book of business and a team of 16 renewal managers serving over 60% of Fortune 500 companies across North America, Japan, and the United Kingdom in the governance and compliance space.

A firm believer in the power of education and continuous growth, Vanessa holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from San José State University and a Master of Science in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the University of Southern California. Recognizing the leadership gaps she witnessed firsthand throughout her career in rapidly scaling startups, she pursued graduate studies to better equip herself as a strategic people leader. She is currently completing her Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership at the University of Southern California, a pursuit driven by her commitment to developing the next generation of business leaders. Her academic foundation is complemented by professional credentials in coaching, human resources, and management, and her contributions at AuditBoard earned her back-to-back President's Club recognition in FY 2021 and FY 2022 — a testament to both her individual excellence and her ability to elevate those around her.

Beyond her corporate achievements, Vanessa Serrano-Bernal is deeply rooted in community, faith, and purposeful giving. As the Founder and CEO of the Lovee Foundation, established in 2024, she channels her passion for education into empowering underserved youth through resume coaching, interview preparation, scholarships, and essential academic resources — a mission born from her own experience as the first in her immigrant family of five to pursue a college education. She is also a proud member of Latinas in Tech and a supporter of the American Heart Association, reflecting her broader commitment to representation and wellness. A mother of two, Vanessa credits her success to consistency, strong mentorship, and an unwavering belief that the emotional intelligence, intuition, and empathy that women bring to leadership are not just assets — they are catalysts for lasting organizational impact.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Vanessa
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to consistency, stability, and the influence of two exceptional mentors. The first was our Chief Customer Officer, Chris Dole, who joined us at the $50 million milestone and remained through our acquisition — someone I still stay in close contact with today. The second was my direct VP, Eugene Katz, who became both a mentor and a dear friend. He lived by a principle he shared with us often: there are three things in life — your health, your family, and your job. He reminded us that without our health, we cannot show up for our families, and that our careers will always be there. Watching our CCO battle and overcome cancer three times — twice while leading our team — made that message deeply personal and enduring for all of us.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I ever received came from my mentor, Eugene Katz. He consistently reminded our team that life comes down to three things: your health, your family, and your job — in that order. He emphasized that without prioritizing our health, we cannot care for those we love, and that our careers will always remain within reach. That perspective was made even more meaningful by our CCO, who fought cancer three times and emerged victorious, including twice while actively leading our organization. It grounded our entire leadership team in what truly matters and shaped how I lead and live to this day.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is simple: go for it, wholeheartedly. This industry has given me and my family an extraordinary level of freedom — including the ability to work remotely, raise two children, and make meaningful investments, not just financial ones, but investments in my own education and the generational impact that comes with it. While tech and sales can feel intimidating as male-dominated spaces, I firmly believe that the qualities women naturally bring — emotional intelligence, intuition, empathy, and a nurturing leadership style — are precisely what drive success in this field. These strengths directly influence forecasting accuracy, people leadership, customer relationships, and the cultivation of thriving organizations. What is often overlooked or taken for granted in women is, in my view, what makes us uniquely positioned to lead and elevate the next generation.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
At the core of everything I do are people, family, and community. In my professional life, I believe in protecting and investing in the people and customers who drive results, while keeping a clear vision of what a meaningful and successful outcome looks like — one that rewards those who contributed to the journey, not just financially, but through career growth, new opportunities, and opened doors. On a personal level, I am deeply rooted in my faith and committed to giving back to my community. As the Founder and CEO of the Lovee Foundation, which I established in 2024, I am dedicated to empowering students in need with tools such as resume writing, interview preparation, scholarships, and essential school resources. This mission is personal — I grew up with immigrant parents and was the first of five children in my family to pursue higher education. That journey required tremendous sacrifice, and now that I have the means to give back, I feel a deep responsibility to help others access rooms and opportunities they never thought possible.
