The Friendship She Had to Let Change

Accepting that meaningful relationships can evolve without becoming failures.

Quote Sandy Krysch, National Account Manager on Influential Women

Short lived friendships just mean that they were put in our path for growth. With a new season comes new buds. Your roots will always be with those that have been there for the long haul.

Friendships, as in life, shift with the ebbs and flows. The best and most beautiful way to love yourself and people you call "friend" is to recognize that change arrives. Embracing the growth with grace and love towards both yourself and your friend cherishing the time you spent in that close connection. Respecting the new dynamic protects the old and the new and gives you a solid foundation from which to remember.

The impact of a friendship isn't always something you can see. Sometimes it lives in the way someone challenges you to think differently, see beyond your own perspective, and grow, while still making you feel supported enough to become more of yourself.

Quote Ciera Nickel, Founder on Influential Women

I've learned that friendship isn't about spending all your time together or even talking or texting all the time. True friends are the people who care about you as you do them, who check in and stay updated because they care, not simply because you're close in proximity.

Quote Jessica Chavez-Smith, Sr. Learning and Development Manager on Influential Women

One of the hardest things I've learned is that not all friendships are meant to stay the same forever. There was a friendship that was once a very important part of my life, and while there wasn't a major disagreement or falling out, our lives gradually moved in different directions. Responsibilities changed, priorities shifted, and the time and energy we once had for each other became harder to find. For a long time, I viewed the change as a loss. I missed the closeness and the ease of the friendship we once shared. Over time, though, I realized that loving someone doesn't always mean holding on to a relationship exactly as it was. Sometimes love means allowing space for growth, change, and different seasons of life. That experience taught me that distance doesn't necessarily diminish the value of a friendship. Some relationships evolve from daily conversations to occasional check-ins, and that doesn't erase the impact they had or the care that still exists. It also taught me that letting go of expectations can be an act of love. Rather than measuring a friendship by how often we talk or how closely our lives remain connected, I learned to appreciate the role that person played in my journey and to be grateful for the memories and lessons we shared. Most importantly, I learned that relationships can change without failing. Sometimes they simply become something different, and there can be beauty and peace in accepting that evolution with grace.

Quote Paulette Gray, Esq., MDR, Staff Attorney IV | Assistant Dean on Influential Women

Friendship to me is beyond personal. It is one of the most precious experiences of my life. Many years ago, someone I thought was my friend belittled and made fun of me. Little did she know I had been grappling for years with the very thing she mocked. Walking through that moment has taught me to STAND!
