When She Did Something Alone for the First Time

Discovering what happened when she stopped waiting for company.

One of the first meaningful things I chose to do alone was travel. It taught me that being comfortable in your own company is a different kind of confidence. You stop waiting for someone else to experience life with you and realize you can create meaningful experiences for yourself.

I drove alone from my home in Indiana to my condo in Florida! It was over an 18 hour drive that I split up into 2 days. I was nervous, but I did it! It felt so freeing! I doubted myself… it was a long way to drive and I do not love driving. But I found out that I am much more capable than I even realized.

One of the first meaningful things I chose to do alone was travel to Amsterdam, Riga, and Vienna. I had always thought experiences like traveling were better when shared with someone else, but being alone gave me the freedom to explore at my own pace, make my own choices, and fully immerse myself in each place. The trip taught me that I truly enjoy my own company. I learned to trust myself, navigate unfamiliar places, step outside of my comfort zone, and be present in the moment. Most importantly, the trip taught me that I don't have to wait for someone else to be available to experience the world. I can go on my own, enjoy my independence, and then choose to share those experiences with others when I want to. Amsterdam, Riga, and Vienna became more than destinations, they became reminders that I am comfortable in my own company and capable of creating meaningful memories both alone and with the people I care about.

Moving alone to a new place taught me that solitude isn't necessarily the absence of companionship; sometimes it is an invitation to become reacquainted with yourself. I learned to build, explore, dream, and live without waiting for someone to join me and discovered a quiet magnificence in knowing that my own company was never a consolation prize, but a gift.
