From Maximum Security to Top Secret Clearance: How One Woman Defied Every Odd Stacked Against Her

From Maximum Security to Top Secret

In a world quick to label, categorize, and count people out, Desiree—known professionally to her readers and audience as D. Ann—stands as living proof that your starting point does not dictate your destination. An author, entrepreneur, and former civil servant, her life is a masterclass in radical resilience, unyielding integrity, and the power of refusing to let circumstances define your legacy.

Her path was forged in the fire. Navigating a turbulent upbringing, Desiree’s journey took her through the maximum-security Texas Youth Commission (TYC) facility and later adult prison. She completed the eighth grade and earned the majority of her high school credits in TYC. While pregnant at the age of eighteen (barely out of TYC), she secured her GED, refusing to let her future slip away.

After being released from prison in December 2003, Desiree wasted no time turning her life around. The very next year, she enrolled in college to complete prerequisites for a medical program, initially unsure of which field she would enter. Deeply motivated by her young son, who had endured numerous scary hospital admissions for lung issues, she chose respiratory therapy.

Two years later, after earning acceptance into the program, her background check came back. Her professor pulled her out of class and urged her to drop out, warning her that her felony record meant she might never get licensed or find a job, risking two years of wasted effort. Looking her professor dead in the eye, Desiree asked, "Are you kicking me out?" When the professor admitted she couldn't, Desiree simply replied, "Then I need to get back to class."

For the next two years, she remained completely locked in. Her professor’s warnings weren't entirely wrong—every single hospital she rotated through for clinicals turned her away because of her record. But it only took one hospital to give her a chance. She graduated, faced zero issues obtaining her Respiratory Care Practitioner license in Texas, and launched a successful medical career that later paved the way to earning her MBA.

Desiree’s journey into high-level national security began unexpectedly. While volunteering at a clinic, she consented to what she thought was a routine local background check, unaware that it was actually an application for a Secret Clearance. When the investigator reviewed her file, he was initially appalled that someone with her record would even apply. Coming from a similar small-town background himself, he asked why she had made those past choices, looking to see if she would offer excuses or a sob story.

Instead, Desiree looked him directly in the eye and said, "Because that's all I saw and was around, and I didn't know how to get out of it. I wanted out, but no one ever comes back to show you the way out, so I followed what I saw and knew."

Her radical honesty resonated. The investigator told her, "It's not so much what you've done, but what you've done since then."

Years later, when she went up for a Top Secret Clearance, she once again assumed her past would shut the door. As the investigator pulled out her thick file of charges, Desiree asked her directly what her chances were of actually getting it. When the investigator asked why she wanted a Top Secret clearance, she didn't hesitate: "Why not? I have a point to prove in life and to myself."

Once again, her current record of earned degrees and dedication superseded her past criminal record. She was granted the clearance.

Over her 10-year career with the U.S. Air Force, Desiree earned multiple quarterly awards and maintained her clearance. Yet the contradictions of her journey highlight the deep systemic barriers she still navigates daily. Even 23 years after her conviction, the permanent felon label follows her. She has been denied Global Entry twice and remains restricted from voting or owning a firearm. And yet, she holds an active Top Secret clearance—a stark testament that true trust is built on character, capability, and proven integrity.

After operating an aesthetic mobile concierge med spa business for two years, Desiree made the bold leap into full-time authoring under her pen name, D. Ann. Today, she independently manages every facet of her literary brand—writing, editing, marketing, and publishing her hit series, Deliverance Case Files, with five books published and a sixth underway. Through her books and platform (holyno.org), she shares real-world experience and spiritual strategy to empower others recovering from trauma and fighting for peace.

When asked what she attributes her success to, Desiree doesn't hesitate: "My success comes down to a rough upbringing paired with an unshakable refusal to let circumstances or people dim my light. Resilience isn't just about surviving hard times—it's about staying dedicated, keeping your inner drive alive, and taking complete ownership of where you're going."

That drive is matched only by her deeply rooted core values. At the top of that list is integrity. "Integrity is my absolute number one value—it is the foundation for everything I do," Desiree shares. "When you lead with integrity, every other principle naturally follows: truthfulness, diligent work, high ethics, and strong morals."

Her father’s early advice—“No matter what you do, keep going to school. There are so many grants, loans, and scholarships out there to go for free... Never stop learning”—remains the blueprint for her lifelong pursuit of growth.

Looking ahead, Desiree continues to give back. Alongside her writing and her efforts to maintain her Air Force clearance, she actively feeds the unhoused community and is organizing a nonprofit to redirect surplus restaurant food to local shelters.

For young women entering her industry or facing their own battles, Desiree offers a powerful, no-nonsense piece of advice: "Never take 'no' for an answer, and never let past mistakes—whether self-inflicted or caused by someone else—define your future. Keep moving forward, even when it feels like you aren't making progress. Every small step in the right direction creates momentum, and if you refuse to stop, those tiny steps will eventually carry you to where you belong."
