Building Confidence One Decision at a Time

Confidence That Doesn't Depend on Me

For many years, I struggled with the word confidence. I struggled because the dictionary defines confidence as "the feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities." Another definition describes it as "the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust." Psychology Today defines confidence as "a belief in oneself, the conviction that one can meet life's challenges and succeed, and the willingness to act accordingly."

While these definitions have merit, I discovered that confidence rooted solely in myself was fragile.

The problem was that when I succeeded, I felt capable. When I failed, I felt like a failure.

Every mountaintop victory brought temporary satisfaction, but every valley left me questioning my worth. I became my own harshest critic, replaying mistakes and convincing myself that I simply was not enough.

Everything changed as I immersed myself in the Word of God.

My faith in Jesus Christ began to grow, and with it came a different kind of confidence—not confidence in my own strength, but confidence in the One who never changes.

I realized that my identity and value were never meant to be determined by my successes or failures. They were always meant to be anchored in Christ.

As Scripture says:

"But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence."
— Jeremiah 17:7 (NLT)

As I continued walking with Christ, I learned to view both victories and setbacks differently. Success became an opportunity to glorify God, while disappointments became opportunities to grow, learn, and trust Him more deeply.

When life did not unfold according to my plans, I found peace in God's promise:

"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them."
— Romans 8:28 (NLT)

Confidence was built one decision at a time—each decision to trust God, believe His promises, and keep moving forward.

Today, I no longer place my confidence in my own abilities alone because human strength has limits. Instead, my confidence rests in Jesus Christ, who has never lost a battle and never will.

My assurance is no longer dependent on perfect performance but on a perfect Savior.

This is how I built confidence—one faithful decision at a time.
