The Power of Presence: How Showing Up for Others Transforms Hardship Into Connection

Question posed~

What Does Showing Up for Someone During a Difficult Time Really Look Like?

Sometimes, it looks like holding someone's hand when they are afraid. Sometimes, it means sitting beside a friend while she shaves her head during her cancer journey. Sometimes, it is making that phone call before every scan or doctor's appointment because you know that, no matter how many times she has been through it, the fear never completely goes away.

And sometimes, showing up simply means staying.

Last Saturday, at our Region 4 TCWSE Sister Circle, we were reminded of the extraordinary power of connection as we listened to two incredible women, Dr. Rachel Alex and Nurse Tonya Upton, share the breast cancer journey from both the patient's and caregiver's perspectives. Their stories reminded us that cancer affects more than the person receiving the diagnosis. It touches families, friendships, caregivers, and every person who chooses to walk alongside someone through the uncertainty.

Their message resonated deeply with me because I have experienced what it means to stand beside people I love during life's hardest chapters.

I have held the hand of a dear friend as we shaved her head, knowing that moment represented so much more than losing her hair. I have made it a point to call before every scan and doctor's appointment because the anticipation, the waiting, and the fear are real every single time. I lost my own dad to cancer, and I continue to show up for my mom as she navigates life without him.

I have also held and carried the weight of grief alongside a dear friend who tragically lost her only daughter. Because when you love someone experiencing that kind of loss, you understand that there isn't a timeline for grief. Every day can be a hard day. You cannot fix it, explain it away, or make it disappear. You can only love them through it.

Over the years, I have learned that showing up isn't always about grand gestures. It is remembering the appointment. Making the phone call. Sending the text. Sitting in silence. Offering a hug. Bringing a meal. Checking in weeks and months after everyone else has returned to their routines.

It is understanding that difficult seasons don't end simply because the calendar moves forward.

As women, leaders, mothers, daughters, wives, and friends, we spend so much time encouraging others, building others up, and creating spaces where people feel valued and supported. But perhaps one of the most important things we can do is make sure the people around us never have to question whether they are walking through their hardest moments alone.

We don't need perfect words. We don't need to have experienced the exact same pain. We simply need to be willing to show up with compassion, consistency, and love.

Because sometimes the greatest gift we can give another woman isn't advice, an answer, or even a solution. It is the reassurance that when life gets hard, she won't have to face it alone.

Show up. Hold the hand. Make the call. Remember the date. Stay a little longer.

That is sisterhood. That is friendship. That is love.

I would especially preserve the final thought, "Remember the date. Stay a little longer." It captures the difference between offering support in the moment and being someone who continues to show up long after the initial crisis has passed.
