Starting Over Is Not Starting From Zero

Why Starting Over Is Not Starting From Zero

Starting Over Is Not Starting From Zero

There is something both exciting and frightening about starting over.

Every time I moved to a new country, I found myself standing at the beginning of a new chapter. New surroundings. New systems. New expectations. And, once again, I had to prove myself.

For a long time, starting over can feel like losing everything you have already built. But with time, I learned something very different:

Starting over does not mean starting from zero.

I carried my experience with me. I carried my knowledge, my resilience, my relationships, my successes, my failures, and every lesson I had learned along the way. No new country could take those things away from me.

My career had already taken me through different countries and different stages of professional growth. I had built my experience in banking in Jordan and continued developing professionally in Dubai. I had worked hard, earned responsibilities, managed people, and built a career that I was proud of.

Then I moved to the United States.

Suddenly, the rules were different.

The experience I had gained over the years was still mine, but the professional system around me was new. There were licenses and requirements that I had not needed in the same way before. I could not simply walk into the U.S. banking industry and step into the same level of position I had held elsewhere.

I had to start again.

One of the hardest parts was accepting a position as a Personal Banker—a role I had held many years earlier in my career.

It would have been easy to look at that position and think, I've already done this. I've already moved beyond this.

Instead, I chose to look at it differently.

I reminded myself that there is dignity in every beginning.

So I accepted the opportunity.

I started learning the U.S. banking system. I learned new regulations, new processes, new expectations, and a different way of serving clients. More importantly, I allowed myself to become a student again.

Nine months later, my company sponsored me to pursue the licenses I needed.

I studied. I worked. I pushed myself. And eventually, I earned those licenses.

That moment meant much more to me than simply passing an exam.

It represented progress.

It was proof that starting over had not erased everything I had accomplished before. Instead, it was adding another layer to my professional journey.

Today, I am working as a Relationship Banker, and I know I still have more development ahead of me before I return to the level of leadership I held in previous countries. And honestly, I am okay with that.

Because I am not the same professional I was before.

I am growing.

I am learning.

I am becoming more knowledgeable about the American financial system. I am developing new skills and perspectives. I am learning from the people around me and challenging myself in ways I may not have experienced if I had stayed comfortable.

And when I eventually reach the leadership position I held before, I believe I will be a better manager—and a better person—because of everything I experienced along the way.

That is what I want other women who are starting over to understand.

Your current position is not your final destination.

Maybe you moved to another country. Maybe you changed careers. Maybe you had to accept a position that was below the level you once held. Maybe you had to learn a new language, a new industry, a new culture, or an entirely new way of doing things.

Don't let your starting point define your potential.

You are not starting from zero.

You are starting with experience.

You are starting with resilience.

You are starting with everything life has already taught you.

Sometimes, the ladder you have to climb in your new home is different from the one you climbed before. But every step still takes you upward.

So don't be discouraged by where you are today.

Focus on where you are going.

Keep learning. Keep developing. Keep showing up. Keep believing that there is more ahead of you.

Because the position you hold today may simply be the first chapter of the next version of your life.

The sky is not the limit. It is simply the direction.
