The Caravan Effect: How Leadership Plants Seeds for the Future

Years ago, Minister Shamfa Cudjoe walked into a room with confidence and poise far beyond her years. She was about people. She was passionate about building the youth of Trinidad and Tobago—our greatest resource—and committed to what she often described as the People’s Business.

As the newly appointed Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the critics were relentless.

“What does she know about sports?” they asked.

Her response was simple:

“What I don’t know, I will learn.”

The 40 Under 40 Initiative

During that time, I had the pleasure and opportunity to serve as Project Administrator for the Ministry’s 40 Under 40 initiative, a research-based youth development program designed to expose upper secondary school students to entrepreneurship and encourage them to explore both conventional and unconventional pathways to meaningful contribution and national development.

Every week, our team traveled from school to school across Trinidad and Tobago. We brought together young lawyers, doctors, media personalities, entrepreneurs, comedians, mas makers, and other accomplished professionals who shared their journeys with students.

Minister Cudjoe insisted on excellence.

Each school caravan had to be memorable. Students received branded tokens, photographs, memorabilia, and food boxes. The goal was not simply to host an event, but to create an experience—one that would remain etched in the hearts and minds of young people long after we had departed.

Like any large initiative, there were challenges. Schedules changed. Buses arrived late. Influencers occasionally canceled at the last minute. Some questioned the program’s value altogether.

Yet we continued.

A Passionate Radio Personality Named Hans

One of the young influencers who consistently showed up was a passionate radio personality named Hans.

Young, energetic, relatable, and already well known among students, Hans connected effortlessly with young people. He was willing to adjust his schedule, share his story, and engage authentically with scholars. While many students were initially excited because he was “the cool guy from the radio,” what stood out to me was something deeper—his genuine love for people and community.

From the sidelines, as I collected program data and monitored outcomes, I watched students lean in. I watched them see possibilities for themselves. I watched hope emerge through conversations with young professionals who looked like them and came from communities similar to theirs.

At the time, none of us knew where life would lead.

Leadership Is Rarely About Predicting Who People Will Become

As I reflect on those years, I realize that leadership is rarely about predicting who people will become. It is about creating the conditions that allow them to become it.

None of us could have known that the young radio personality inspiring students from school stages would one day serve as a Member of Parliament. We were doing the work—planning, evaluating, mentoring, encouraging, and serving. Minister Cudjoe was creating opportunities. Dr. Rowley was setting expectations for accountability and results. Influencers like Hans were giving generously of their time and talents. Together, we were investing in young people.

That Is Why Leadership Matters

The policies we design, the programmes we implement, the standards we uphold, and the opportunities we create often outlive our tenure and our titles. Leadership plants seeds in people. Years later, those seeds become service. Service becomes influence. Influence becomes legacy.

Fast Forward to Today

Minister Shamfa Cudjoe is now Shamfa Cudjoe-Lewis, serving the people of Trinidad and Tobago as the Opposition Party’s Political Leader for the Tobago arm. Hans Des Vignes no longer primarily influences audiences through radio waves or school caravans. He is now serving as a Member of Parliament, advocating for his community and contributing to national development in a different way.

This is not a story about politics or political parties.

When I think about the 40 Under 40 initiative, I think of young people being exposed to positive role models. They were encouraged to dream beyond limitations. They were shown that leadership comes in many forms and that success is not reserved for a select few. Most importantly, they were reminded that their voices, talents, and aspirations matter.

Perhaps that is the greatest lesson of all.

Youth Magnificence

Youth are not simply the leaders of tomorrow. They are leaders in development today. When we invest in them intentionally, challenge them appropriately, and believe in their potential, we do more than change individual lives—we strengthen communities, transform nations, and build legacies that endure.

That is youth magnificence.

That is leadership.

That is legacy.

It is a story about purpose.

It is a story about what happens when leaders invest in people before the world recognizes their potential.
