You Don't Have to Chase Love to Attract It

For years, women have been given rules about dating, attraction, and what it means to be desirable. Don't be too forward. Let him chase you. Don't show too much interest. Be confident, but don't intimidate him. Be independent, but make sure you let him know you need him. And whatever you do, don't let him think you're trying too hard.

No wonder dating can feel exhausting. After years of navigating careers, raising families, overcoming challenges, and building lives we're proud of, why should connecting with someone we find attractive require an entirely new set of rules?

I'm Shelly O'Connell, a Flirting Coach for Women and the author of Finding Your Flirt. My philosophy is refreshingly simple: You don't need to become someone else to attract meaningful connection. You need to reconnect with the woman you already are.

Through my work, I've seen how easily capable, intelligent women can lose their confidence when it comes to attraction. Women who make decisions all day at work suddenly find themselves overanalyzing a text message. Women who know their worth begin questioning themselves when a man sends mixed signals. And women who are vibrant and engaging in other areas of life sometimes forget how to relax and enjoy the experience of meeting someone new.

What if the answer isn't trying harder? What if it's learning to approach attraction differently?

Confidence Isn't About Being Perfect. It's About Being Yourself.

Many women believe confidence is something you either have or you don't. They assume that naturally magnetic women were simply born that way, while everyone else has to work harder to compete.

I see it differently. Confidence is a skill we can practice, develop, and strengthen.

You don't have to be the most beautiful woman in the room, have the perfect response to every question, or know exactly how a conversation will unfold. You simply need to become more comfortable expressing who you are.

That might mean making eye contact instead of looking away. Smiling when someone catches your interest. Allowing yourself to laugh, show curiosity, or communicate that you're enjoying a conversation. It might mean expressing interest without feeling that you've somehow surrendered your power.

These small moments matter because they help you stop monitoring yourself and start experiencing the interaction.

My background in behavioral science has shaped the way I approach personal transformation. I believe meaningful change doesn't always require years of struggle or an elaborate plan to fix yourself. Sometimes, a fresh perspective and a few practical tools can help you see possibilities that were there all along.

You don't need to earn the right to feel confident. You can begin practicing it today.

Flirting Isn't a Game. It's an Invitation to Connect.

One of the biggest misconceptions about flirting is that it's a strategy for getting someone to want you. We've been taught to use calculated responses, conceal our interest, and make ourselves less available in the hope that someone will find us more desirable. But when every interaction becomes a test of whether we're doing the right thing, where is the room for enjoyment?

I believe flirting is play. It's the art of engaging with another person through warmth, curiosity, eye contact, humor, and a willingness to be present.

It doesn't require a clever line or a carefully constructed persona. It begins when you allow yourself to notice someone, enjoy the moment, and express a little of your personality.

And here's something important: flirting doesn't guarantee that someone will be interested in you. That's not its purpose. Its purpose is to give you the confidence to express yourself, discover whether interest is mutual, and enjoy the experience without making another person's response a verdict on your worth.

You can be playful and still have standards. You can express interest without chasing. You can enjoy attention without owing anyone anything.

When women understand this, flirting becomes less intimidating and far more enjoyable. Instead of trying to secure a particular outcome, they begin participating in the experience of connection.

You Can Be Feminine Without Giving Up Your Power.

The conversation around feminine energy can sometimes create another set of rules for women to follow. Be softer. Be more receptive. Never make the first move. Let him lead. Don't be too direct. But what if femininity isn't about following a script?

To me, embracing your feminine nature means allowing yourself to experience and express the qualities that feel authentic to you. That may include warmth, sensuality, intuition, playfulness, tenderness, boldness, or a delight in being noticed.

It doesn't mean becoming passive, abandoning your boundaries, or pretending to be someone you're not.

A woman can be accomplished and still enjoy being pursued. She can initiate a conversation and still appreciate a man who takes initiative. She can be independent while remaining open to love, affection, and partnership.

There is no contradiction between knowing what you want and allowing yourself to enjoy the process of discovering it. The goal isn't to perform femininity correctly. It's to stop suppressing the parts of yourself that make you feel vibrant, expressive, and alive.

Stop Asking, "Does He Like Me?" Start Asking, "Do I Like How I Feel Around Him?"

One of the most significant shifts a woman can make in dating is changing the question she's asking herself. When we're focused on being chosen, we can become so preoccupied with another person's opinion that we forget to pay attention to our own experience.

Did he text back quickly? Was his comment a sign of interest? Should I wait before responding? Did I say too much? What if he loses interest? It's exhausting to turn every interaction into an investigation.

Instead, consider what happens when you bring your attention back to yourself. Are you enjoying the conversation? Do you feel comfortable expressing your personality? Is there genuine curiosity on both sides? Does this person demonstrate consistency, respect, and interest through their actions?

You are not auditioning for a place in someone else's life. You are deciding whether that person belongs in yours. This shift doesn't mean ignoring your feelings or pretending you don't care. It means remembering that your desires, values, and boundaries matter just as much as the other person's.

Healthy attraction isn't about convincing someone to choose you. It's about discovering whether you choose each other.

What If You Didn't Need to Fix Yourself to Find Love?

I work with women who are tired of overthinking, frustrated by dating patterns, or unsure how to express their interest without feeling vulnerable. Some have spent years being strong for everyone else. Others have become so accustomed to managing responsibilities that they've forgotten how to relax into a moment of fun.

Many aren't looking for another complicated system to master. They want to feel confident again. They want to enjoy meeting people, communicate naturally, and build relationships that reflect who they truly are.

That's why my approach to flirting coaching isn't about giving women a new personality or teaching them how to manipulate attraction. It's about helping them recognize the patterns that hold them back, develop practical skills, and rediscover the freedom to express themselves authentically.

Sometimes transformation begins with something surprisingly simple: a new way of looking at an old situation.

When you stop treating dating as a performance, you create room for curiosity. When you stop measuring your worth by someone else's attention, you become freer to make choices that honor you. And when you allow yourself to play, laugh, and enjoy the moment, connection becomes an experience rather than another responsibility.

You don't have to change everything about yourself. You may simply need to change the way you approach it.

The Woman You're Looking for Is Already Within You.

I wrote Finding Your Flirt because I believe women deserve a different conversation about attraction. One that doesn't tell them they're too old, too independent, too inexperienced, or somehow not enough. One that doesn't reduce flirting to tricks or suggest that their value depends on whether someone finds them desirable.

I want women to rediscover the joy of being themselves. Because flirting is about more than finding a romantic partner. It's about being engaged with life, noticing possibilities, expressing curiosity, and allowing yourself to experience moments of connection without overthinking every detail.

You can be powerful and playful. Independent and open to love. Confident and still learning. You can have boundaries and a sense of adventure. And you don't have to wait for someone else to make you feel vibrant, attractive, or alive.

If dating has become more stressful than enjoyable, perhaps it's time to stop looking for another rule to follow and start exploring a different way of connecting.

You don't need to chase love, compete for attention, or become someone you're not. You can learn to express your confidence, embrace your natural magnetism, and create space for the kind of connection you truly want.

That's the heart of my work as a Flirting Coach for Women. Through Coaching by Shelly, I help women build confidence, rediscover their playful nature, and approach attraction in ways that feel authentic, empowering, and fun.

Because the goal isn't simply to attract someone else. It's to become a woman who enjoys the experience of being herself, knows what she brings to a relationship, and feels confident enough to choose a connection that brings out the best in her.
