Her Story

About Abigail

I originally wanted to focus on the medical field and become a nurse because I really wanted to help people and work with kids, with pediatrics always being a thought. But my dad helped me realize that I just couldn't really handle the workload that goes with managing patients and helping with bodily fluids and things like that. So I started to focus on other ways that I could help people and still be very involved with their lives and have a responsibility for them. I wanted to work within the law field, and I'm actually currently studying for my LSAT right now. I really wanted to still keep that sense of personability with people and get within their lives, and law seemed like the correct path to go down. With Sandy Steves, who mainly focuses on family law, I got to work with a lot of clients that were helping with custody and things like that, so I was still able to kind of indirectly work with children that way. I just really wanted to make sure that I was able to help people within the community, especially because I live in Westminster, so it's really small. There are a lot of firms in the area, and I've talked with a bunch of these lawyers. It's just a really small community here, and it's just another way to help out. I just finished an internship at the courthouse, and I absolutely loved that. I worked for Judge Hecker, who's known to be very particular with his paperwork and making sure that everything is fine and proper, especially because we're dealing with people's lives. Making sure that everything is tip-top shape for him and giving him my summarization notes from listening to him in court, and him telling me that it was really good and detailed, that was a really big highlight for me. I also worked with his law clerk, Will, and him telling me that my summarizations were well and that he was able to use them when creating paperwork and filing documents for Judge Hecker was also a really notable moment for me.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would have to say my mother. Watching her get ready for her teaching work and everything was just so inspiring. It helped me form my own work ethic and to be dedicated to what I wanted to do. We would get to school early in the morning, she would get all of her stuff prepared, and we wouldn't leave until she was done as well, so whenever she was getting prepped for the next day, we wouldn't leave until she was all set. It just showed that there is a dedication side that you really need in order to be successful, and I really took that on. She very much inspired me to do that and be my best. She also went to McDaniel College, so she was a really big influence in getting me to work within an undergrad, and I strive to get additional schooling for lawyership and everything. She always started my inspiration for getting an education, making my way, and making sure that my name is the one on that diploma.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say to get as involved as you can. Of course, with maintaining your class schedule and things and wanting to make sure that you become the best student, because that's how you get recognized, but all these extracurriculars, they help you with time management, and they help you develop these skills that you will need within your career path. You're obviously going to be working with a lot of people, so getting into activities and things where you are going to be in a social setting is definitely beneficial for these girls to get into too. I know for me, I just really wanted to be as involved as I could be, and that really was an asset. It really was beneficial to my success, and I think that a lot of young girls should really take into that.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say you have to have a sense of honor when it comes to things like this. You need to make sure that you're doing the best that you can, especially when you're working on classwork. Academic dishonesty is a complete no-no. You need to have a sense of ownership with yourself. I would say for other values, I guess you could put truth in there too. You need to have that with your honor. You need to be able to speak your mind, but also do it respectfully, be respectful to other people. You can support other people. I know that I love to be everyone's number one fan, so making sure that you create a positive environment for everyone to feel comfortable and make sure that they're all doing their best, things like that.
