Her Story
About Amanda
I currently serve as a team leader for the Center for AI and Digital Policy, where I lead a team of 30 international researchers. In this role, I'm constantly in meetings with professionals at senior levels, including legal counsel and advocacy groups. We research and provide risk analysis for AI legislation all over the world, helping to understand how we can work toward international consensus on AI governance. I provide weekly presentations on how policies and regulations around the world are progressing, what standards researchers need to consider, and the risk ratings for various institutions. What drew me to this field is that while I was in law school, I always wanted to create a positive impact and help society. But I came to see law as very reactive - someone gets damaged, and then we try to make them whole again. During my MBA, I realized that if I could be part of a team helping design the products and services that would be deployed in society, I would have the potential to be on the front seat to create the guardrails that would avoid people getting hurt in the first place. Now in my current position, I'm able to provide senior levels with insights on what concepts and technologies they need to understand, what the potentials and risks are, so we can create those guardrails and avoid having to go through the judicial system after damages occur. I really enjoy doing the research and putting in the solutions that I believe would be good for corporations and society.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't get lost in the noise. It's really hard nowadays not to get lost in the noise, especially when you're a young professional trying to differentiate yourself from others. When you go into LinkedIn, everyone is super successful, everyone is super happy with their jobs, everyone is doing more certificates and more coursework. In the fields of technology, there are a lot of certifications that you can acquire, and it's really easy to get lost in the noise. But definitely focus on yourself, focus on what you envision for you as a professional, what makes you happy. I think that's step one for you to be a good professional.
