About Annie

I'm a sophomore at Centre College where I'm majoring in History and minoring in African American Studies. Since my freshman fall, I've been deeply involved on campus as an ambassador, leading tours and panels to help prospective students make their decision about coming to Centre. I'm also a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority chapter at Centre College, where I hold several leadership positions and am living in the house this year, which has become a pretty big part of my life. Additionally, I work as a consultant in our Writing Center, helping students edit their essays and applications for scholarships and internships. Currently, I'm working as a data research assistant for Kentucky Free, a local government organization, where I research how taxpayer funds are being utilized by our state, which involves bipartisan collaboration and developing my research and data entry skills. This summer, I'll be interning at the Filson Historical Society Museum in Louisville. I'm also working with the Boyle County African American Historical Society to find a way to memorialize African American World War I veterans who may not have received recognition following their service. Right now, we're trying to get a historical marker placed in Danville to honor them, and I'm doing research for my World War I in Africa class on the eight Harlem Hellfighters who came out of Boyle County. In January, I studied abroad in Ghana, West Africa for three weeks, taking an African American Studies course that explored identity and the meaning of home. My eventual goal is to be a history professor myself, specifically in African studies, and I'm hoping to continue studying abroad and eventually get back to the continent of Africa to spend more time there throughout my career.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The biggest piece of advice I've received is just to follow what I'm really passionate about. I think that, especially since you are an organization that specifically tries to empower women, it's really important for women in the education industry to find and explore those niche topics that they may be interested in through research, or decide to teach those subjects. We see a lot of women being educators at the elementary, middle school, or high school level, but it's one of my goals in my life to make sure that I work on achieving that place in higher education, and then also working on research, and hopefully also studying abroad the rest of my life. I really want to eventually be able to get back to the continent of Africa and spend more time there, and I'm hoping to become a professor in African studies.
