Her Story

About Ashley

My journey in construction started early - all through high school, I operated equipment for my dad's field tile installation company. I ran correctional boring machines installing underground pipes, operated tractors, scrapers, backhoes, and even helped dig out ponds over summers. I fell in love with the construction industry during those years. I pursued my bachelor's in business and project management, and during my internship with McCarthy, I discovered my passion for estimating on heavy highway and civil projects. After finishing my last year of school, I moved to Utah and continued in estimating, now working for a general contractor on data center projects in the mission critical space. My expertise is on the civil side - dirt, concrete, asphalt, and pipe. In my current role, I coordinate with subcontractors, review plans to ensure there are no scope gaps, manage deliverables and timelines, and work closely with our team. One of my most notable achievements has been assisting with our most recent data center project and having the opportunity to work directly with the owner and our team lead.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I'd say take any opportunity that's given to you, even if it's not directly what you think you're gonna do. When I started my first internship, I thought I wanted to do project management, and it was an estimating and project management rotation. I thought I was gonna hate the estimating side, being stuck in an office, and I ended up really loving that. Even getting an opportunity to start in the field, you know, seeing just how equipment works and how it runs, knowing all of that, and then getting to come in the office if that's what you want to do and looking at plans, it helps you understand all of that a lot better.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In Mission Critical, our biggest challenge is just having enough people for the jobs we're getting. It's definitely taken off in the last couple years, and getting enough people to do the job, so we're not all working our 80-hour weeks, is definitely a struggle.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Hard work and honesty are really important to me. Personally, I'm not gonna go bid shop or do any of that. I think having honesty and relationships with your subs, or even if you're on the sub side, working with your GCs, having a level of honesty in our relationships are very important.
