Her Story
About Bhoomi
I'm a software engineer at Meta, where I've been working for almost 2 years now. My focus is on AI/ML, specifically on validation of AI models and safety. Basically, I make sure that whatever goes out is not bad - we do benchmarking and validation to ensure the models are safe. What I think is my most notable achievement is that I have the ability to understand the research side and also understand what it requires to bring it to people in production and at scale. My journey in this field began with my bachelor's in computer engineering, where I was first introduced to AI. Back in 2017, I worked on a personal assistant AI project and published a paper on it. That experience led me to pursue my master's in Computer Science with a focus on AI. During my master's at WPI, I did thesis work on detecting TBI using smartphone sensors, which gave me valuable research experience in AI. After completing my master's, I wanted to gain more practical experience, so I focused on the infrastructure side - the infrastructure that actually binds AI and ensures it can be served. I worked at NetApp for two and a half years in this capacity before joining Meta. I've been in the field professionally for 7 years, and more than 10 years if you include all my academic work.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think things have changed a little, but it's still an interesting field, because you get to make a lot of impact, no matter what amount of work you're doing. Software engineering and AI have the ability to connect to a lot of people, even when you go to remote places. For example, if you take my TBI example with smartphone sensors, everybody has a smartphone, and now you can reach out to even remote places where there are no doctors. So there is a good amount of impact that you can create with AI and software engineering as a whole.
